Raleigh, North Carolina, has officially opened the gates for the North Carolina State Fair, running from Oct. 15 through Oct. 25, 2026. State officials expect about 1 million visitors at the fairgrounds this year. Guests will enjoy major infrastructural improvements, a record-breaking Ferris wheel, and dozens of new food choices, despite ongoing regional road construction.

State Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler announced the completion of a three-year, $60 million renovation project during a meeting with state leaders. This extensive overhaul updates multiple parts of the West Raleigh fairgrounds to improve the visitor experience and modernize facilities.

Major Fairgrounds Upgrades and New Attractions

The $60 million project brought major changes to the campus layout and historic structures. Key additions include a new event center, a dedicated flower show building, a complete remodeling of the historic Dorton Arena, exterior facelifts for the commercial and education building, and fully modernized campus restrooms.

This year also introduces the America 250 Wheel, the largest portable observation wheel in the fair’s history. This towering ride honors the upcoming semiquincentennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Labor Commissioner Luke Farley confirmed that safety inspections are underway across the grounds. State inspectors have reviewed rides as setup progressed to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols.

Culinary Additions and Traffic Considerations

Food remains a central part of the annual event. While a longtime favorite, Al’s French Fries, ended its run dating back to 1957, vendors have introduced 84 new food items. These options include unique savory combinations and sweet creations alongside traditional fair foods.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation noted that road work near the property remains unfinished. Construction along Blue Ridge Road is now projected to finish by 2027. State officials advise travelers to expect typical fair traffic and use designated off-site parking lots with shuttle services.

Commissioner Troxler noted that attendance varies between weekdays and weekends, recommending Monday through Wednesday as the best days to visit for lighter crowds.
