Celebrity Traitors Breaks Records With 9 Million Viewers

The second series of the BBC’s hit reality competition, The Celebrity Traitors, has returned to television screens with unprecedented ratings. It drew an average overnight audience of 8.9 million viewers and peaked at over 9 million. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman and filmed inside Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands, the psychological game show captured nearly 55 percent of the total television viewing audience during its broadcast.

The launch episode outperformed the premiere of the show’s inaugural season by approximately 3 million viewers. Last year’s opening episode, broadcast in 2025, averaged 6.1 million overnight viewers before scaling up significantly over extended 28-day measurement periods. According to industry metrics, the latest premiere stands as the second most-watched television episode in the U.K. this year, excluding sports programming. It trails only the finale of the civilian edition of The Traitors that aired in January.

The high-stakes format pits 21 well-known personalities against one another in a battle of deception, suspicion, and shifting alliances. The star-studded roster for the second series features prominent figures including actors Richard E. Grant, Bella Ramsey, Michael Sheen, Ross Kemp, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Sharon Rooney, and Sebastian Croft; presenters Maya Jama, Amol Rajan, Joe Lycett, Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, Rob Beckett, Joanne McNally, and King Kenny; musicians James Blunt and Leigh-Anne Pinnock; comedian James Acaster; culinary icon Jerry Hall; and academic Professor Hannah Fry.

High Drama and Uncomfortable Confrontations in the Castle

The opening episode immediately established high tension. Richard E. Grant and Maya Jama were selected to serve as the initial Traitors. Grant’s outspoken enthusiasm for the game quickly caused friction within the group, accidentally raising suspicions among fellow contestants. The episode concluded on a dramatic cliffhanger, with comedians James Acaster and Amol Rajan summoned to face the existing Traitors directly.

Both Acaster and Rajan were forced to plead their cases to join the inner circle. They offered strategic assistance to help deflect scrutiny away from Grant, who had inadvertently exposed his identity to multiple players. The suspenseful sequence left audiences waiting to discover which contestant would be spared and which would face immediate elimination from the cash prize pool of up to £100,000, designated for a charity of their choice.

Complementing the main broadcast, the companion show Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked drew an additional 3 million viewers, while online engagement soared. Media reports noted that the opening episodes generated over 600 internet memes within a 48-hour window. This underscored the cultural footprint of the contestants’ spontaneous decisions inside the castle.

Franchise Expansion and Broadcast Schedule

The overwhelming success of the celebrity edition highlights the enduring popularity of the broader franchise produced by Studio Lambert. The current month-long run airs Thursdays and Fridays at 8 p.m. on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Following its conclusion, the fifth season of the civilian version of The Traitors is scheduled to premiere early next year.

Internationally, the format continues to expand. In the United States, Peacock hosts a parallel celebrity version presented by Alan Cumming, alongside the civilian spin-off series New Blood. As the current U.K. series continues, personal pressures, strategic betrayals, and unexpected eliminations will further test the celebrity contestants as they navigate the complexities of trust and deception.
