Lawyer Faces Backlash Over Wood Reputation Argument in Bail

Public outrage has erupted following comments made during a domestic violence bail hearing in Queensland, where a defense lawyer argued that former reality television personality Sam Wood needed bail to salvage his professional reputation and career.

Mathew Cuskelly, representing the 46-year-old former Bachelor star at the Maroochydore Magistrates Court, told proceedings that his client was experiencing severe depression and required an opportunity to address his mental health and business standing. Cuskelly stated that Wood’s career was taking “a hell of a beating” amid serious allegations involving his wife, Snezana Wood.

The remarks immediately drew fierce public criticism across social media and from maternal health advocates. Observers criticized the choice of words, arguing that centering the professional consequences of the accused individual detracts from the gravity of the allegations and shifts focus away from the safety of the victim.

Details of the Charges and Court Allegations

Wood faces charges of assault occasioning bodily harm in a domestic violence context and strangulation in a domestic setting. The charges stem from an alleged incident on Saturday at La Mer on Hastings Street in Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where the family was staying on holiday.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Grigoris informed the bail hearing that officers responded following an emergency call made by Wood’s 21-year-old stepdaughter, Eve, who reported that the victim had been choked. According to police submissions, an argument broke out as the couple prepared to pack their belongings to return to Melbourne. The court heard that Snezana Wood was pushed into a wardrobe before Eve intervened.

Prosecutor Grigoris detailed that when Eve told Wood to stop shouting, Wood approached her aggressively, prompting Snezana to step between them. It is alleged that Wood then placed his hands around his wife’s throat, forced her to the floor, pinned her down, and banged her head against the floor, leaving her unable to breathe and fearing for her life.

Defense Position and Bail Denial

During the hearing, defense solicitor Cuskelly maintained that his client denies strangling or assaulting his wife. Cuskelly suggested that Wood might rely on a self-defence argument at trial, claiming that stepdaughter Eve was being hostile and that Wood merely pushed Snezana away after she approached him.

Cuskelly also presented an affidavit from forensic psychologist Professor Ian Coyle, arguing that Wood’s depression was extremely severe and that he needed access to professional help. However, Sergeant Grigoris successfully opposed bail, noting that Wood lacked ties to Queensland and that the primary consideration remained the safety and protection of the complainant and her children.

Magistrate proceedings resulted in Wood being denied bail. He was remanded in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on November 23.

Corporate and Public Fallout

The legal fallout has extended swiftly into the business sphere. Wood founded the fitness platform 28 by Sam Wood, which he sold to DBG Health in 2022 while remaining the public face of the brand.

Following news of the arrest and court proceedings, DBG Health distanced itself from Wood, announcing a zero-tolerance policy toward domestic violence. By Tuesday, the company officially cut all commercial ties with the fitness entrepreneur.

Social media commentators and public figures have continued to debate the language utilized by legal representatives in cases involving violence against women, emphasizing that public discourse should prioritize the well-being and safety of victims over the commercial standing of defendants facing serious criminal charges.
