Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday night, according to local authorities. The suspected gunman also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff at a residence near the 700 block of Perry Street.
Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah addressed reporters late Friday, describing the incident as one of the most difficult scenes officers and investigators have ever encountered. The death toll includes multiple victims discovered throughout the home, with initial reports indicating two children and a pregnant woman were among those killed.
Police Response and Standoff on Perry Street
The incident began at approximately 4:52 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, when Erie police received emergency calls reporting shots fired near 7th and Perry streets. Upon arrival, responding officers found two women lying in the roadway suffering from fatal gunshot wounds to the head and face.
Witnesses informed authorities that they saw an armed suspect firing a weapon outside before he retreated inside a nearby house. Officers surrounded the property and called in the Erie Bureau of Police SWAT Team. According to Police Chief Lorah, authorities attempted to persuade the man to surrender, but additional gunshots were heard from inside the residence.
When tactical teams cleared the house, they discovered multiple victims dead inside alongside the suspected shooter, who was armed with a handgun and appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
As of late Friday evening, authorities had not officially released the identities of the victims. They also had not established a clear motive or determined the exact relationship between the gunman and those inside the home. Investigators and the Erie County Coroner’s Office remained on the scene processing evidence well into the night.
City officials and police leadership assured residents that the situation had been contained. Chief Lorah confirmed that information available to investigators indicated no continuing threat to the public.
“Our hearts are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by tonight’s tragedy,” the City of Erie said in a public statement. “There are no words that can adequately express the magnitude of the loss of life here.”
The investigation into the shooting remains active as detectives continue to conduct interviews with family members and neighbors living near Perry Street.
