Demi Moore nearly lost her breakout role in the 1985 coming-of-age film St. Elmo’s Fire. She arrived at a costume fitting under the influence of alcohol and drugs. According to screenwriter Carl Kurlander, this incident happened about two weeks before filming began. It prompted director Joel Schumacher to seriously consider replacing her with pop icon Madonna.

Speaking on an October 8, 2026, episode of the Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast, Kurlander shared details of the casting crisis. He recalled that costume designer Susan Becker noticed Moore’s impaired state at the fitting. Becker immediately alerted Schumacher.

The Ultimatum and Madonna’s Consideration

At the time, a 22-year-old Moore was cast as Jules Van Patten. This character was a glamorous young woman whose outward appearance masked a severe personal struggle. The role mirrored the actress’s real-life battles. Following the fitting report, Schumacher and producer Lauren Shuler Donner confronted Moore directly.

Kurlander recounted that Schumacher did not mince words. He reportedly told the young actress to “go kill yourself on someone else’s movie.” However, Shuler Donner intervened to advocate for a second chance. The production team issued a strict ultimatum: if Moore could clean herself up within 10 days, she could keep the part.

Uncertain whether Moore could conquer her habits in time, Schumacher met with Madonna. Believing the rising pop singer was destined for massive stardom, the director was fully prepared to hand the role over to her.

Saving Her Career Through Recovery

Faced with the prospect of losing the defining film role, Moore took immediate action. She attended Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings. The production team also arranged for a 24/7 sober companion to stay with her throughout the entire shoot.

When the cast assembled for the initial table read, Kurlander noticed a dramatic shift in her demeanor. “She clearly had more than just cleaned up,” he noted.

Moore has since been candid about this dark period in her life. She reflected on her motivations in her 2019 memoir Inside Out and the 2024 Hulu documentary Brats. She admitted that the fear of losing the career-making movie was the primary catalyst for her sobriety at the time. She noted that she did not yet value herself enough to get clean solely for her own well-being.

Thanks to the support of Schumacher, Shuler Donner, and executive Craig Baumgarten, Moore secured her place in the legendary Brat Pack ensemble. She starred alongside Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, and Mare Winningham. The role cemented her status in Hollywood and marked a pivotal chapter in her early career.
