October 13, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is scheduled to dedicate the Montpelier Idaho Temple on Sunday, October 18, 2026. This sacred structure in southeastern Idaho is the faith’s 225th operating temple worldwide.

The primary dedicatory session begins at 10 a.m. MDT. A rebroadcast of the ceremony follows at 2 p.m. MDT for meetinghouses across the temple district, which serves more than 15,000 members in Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming.

Milestones and Construction History of the Montpelier Idaho Temple

Church President Russell M. Nelson announced the Montpelier Idaho Temple during the general conference in April 2022. A groundbreaking ceremony in June 2023 officially began construction at the site on the northeast corner of Washington Street and Sixth Street.

Before Sunday’s dedication, the two-story sacred structure welcomed visitors during a free public open house. The viewing period ran from Sept. 10 through Sept. 26, 2026, excluding Sundays, allowing guests to tour the interior rooms, including the celestial room, sealing rooms, and waiting areas.

Significance for Idaho Latter-Day Saints

Idaho has nearly 483,000 members of the Church organized into more than 1,300 congregations. Once dedicated by President Eyring, the Montpelier facility will operate as the eighth dedicated temple in Idaho.

The state’s existing operating houses of the Lord include temples located in:

  • Idaho Falls
  • Boise
  • Burley
  • Rexburg
  • Twin Falls
  • Meridian
  • Pocatello

Other temples across the state, such as the Teton River Idaho Temple and the Coeur d’Alene Idaho Temple, remain under construction, while others like the Caldwell Idaho Temple progress through planning stages.

President Eyring’s Apostolic Ministry and Temple Dedications

President Eyring, 93, serves as the second senior apostle by service time. He was called to the apostleship in April 1995 and has presided over numerous dedicatory and rededicatory events globally.

“Brothers and sisters, I humbly testify that as we attend the temple, we can be reminded of the eternal nature of our spirits, our relationship with the Father and His divine Son, and our ultimate desire to return to our heavenly home,” President Eyring has stated.

The Montpelier facility is the 11th temple dedicated by President Eyring during his ministry. His previous dedications include the Lindon Utah Temple in May 2026, the Red Cliffs Utah Temple in March 2024, and the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple in August 2023, as well as international temples such as the Paris France Temple and the San Salvador El Salvador Temple.

Unlike standard meetinghouses or chapels used for weekly Sunday worship, temples are houses of the Lord where members make sacred covenants and participate in ordinances aimed at uniting families for eternity.
