Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster have released the official first trailer for River, an upcoming slasher horror film directed by Joshua Giuliano in his feature directorial debut. The movie stars Jane Levy, Jessica Rothe, and Max Mattern as three estranged siblings whose family reunion turns into a terrifying fight for survival.
The film follows the siblings as they travel to an isolated river to scatter their father’s ashes following his death. However, their solemn trip takes a dark turn when their boat suddenly breaks down. Stranded and vulnerable, they realize a mysterious, masked figure is hunting them down one by one along the riverbanks.
River was previously acquired by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Atomic Monster following its premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where it screened in the prominent Midnight Madness section. The project generated substantial buzz among horror enthusiasts and critics during its festival run, positioning it as a major genre release for early 2027.
Behind the Scenes of River
Director Joshua Giuliano transitions to feature-length filmmaking with River, bringing his experience from directing critically noted short films. Together with Max Mattern, the trio portrays the complicated emotional dynamics of a fractured family forced to cooperate under extreme, life-threatening circumstances.
