NCIS Origins Reunites Gibbs and DiNozzo on October 20

A decade after their last shared scene, Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly will officially reunite as Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo in CBS’s NCIS: Origins on Tuesday, October 20. According to TVLine, the upcoming episode brings the iconic characters together at NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., following a dangerous shooting that leaves Gibbs seeking assistance from his former subordinate.

This landmark reunion marks the first time Harmon and Weatherly have appeared onscreen together since Weatherly departed the flagship NCIS series in 2016 during the Season 13 finale, "Family First." CBS has also released a first-look photograph showcasing the two actors back in the same room ahead of the episode’s broadcast.

The Plot Driving Gibbs and DiNozzo Together

The storyline stems directly from events established in the October 6 premiere, when unknown assailants shot Gibbs during a present-day arc connected to his past. After faking his death, Gibbs returns to the agency’s Washington headquarters on a mission to protect someone he cares about and track down the people responsible.

Seeking help, he walks straight into the office of the agency’s newly appointed director: Tony DiNozzo. This dynamic sets up a fascinating reversal of roles for longtime viewers. For 13 seasons, Tony served as the wisecracking senior field agent who frequently tested Gibbs’ patience with movie references and jokes. Now, Tony runs the agency.

“Home means family, and whether it’s been 10 minutes or 10 years, when you need them, family’s always there,” Gibbs says in preview footage while knocking on Tony’s office door.

Connecting Past and Present Timelines

Season 3 of NCIS: Origins has expanded its scope by weaving Harmon back into the narrative as a narrator and present-day anchor while continuing to explore Gibbs’ early career in the 1990s at Camp Pendleton through actor Austin Stowell. The unfolding mystery links decades-old events from Gibbs’ early days to the present threat that ultimately forces him out of hiding.

The October 20 episode, titled "Return of the Mack," will also feature Adam Campbell returning as a younger Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard, assisting with a 1992 murder investigation involving a Marine. Meanwhile, the present-day narrative delivers the heavily anticipated face-to-face interaction between Gibbs and Director DiNozzo.

What This Means for the NCIS Universe

The crossover milestone highlights a strong season for the broader franchise. Weatherly recently reprised his role in the flagship series, while NCIS: Origins has seen strong viewership growth, pulling in 4.39 million viewers for its season premiere-a 20% increase over the previous year.

Fans continue to ask about characters like Ziva, who is mentioned in the new season but does not physically appear. Executive producer Steven D. Binder noted that she remains a felt presence through her shared child with Tony. However, the primary focus remains squarely on the historic reunion between Gibbs and DiNozzo.

When and Where to Watch

Fans eager to watch the long-awaited pairing can catch the episode when it airs on Tuesday, October 20, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Episodes are also available to stream live and on-demand via Paramount+.
