NBC Sets January 2027 Debut for The Rockford Files Reboot

NBC is officially bringing back a television classic. The network has slated the debut of its highly anticipated contemporary update of The Rockford Files for January 2027. Headlined by veteran television star David Boreanaz, the revival has secured a 13-episode first season order as part of NBC’s winter broadcast schedule.

The modern-day adaptation keeps the core premise of the beloved 1974-1980 original series, which famously starred James Garner as private investigator Jim Rockford. In the upcoming iteration, Boreanaz stars as a newly paroled man who served time for a crime he did not commit. Returning to Los Angeles to rebuild his life as a private investigator, Rockford quickly finds himself navigating dangerous territory. He gets caught squarely in the crosshairs of local law enforcement and organized crime.

Production Scale and Financials

According to reports from Collider and state film documents, the production carries a reported budget of $69,673,000 for its inaugural 13-episode run. The project’s financial footing was further solidified when the California Film Commission’s television tax credit report identified the production as receiving approximately $21 million in tax credits. This highlights the state’s continued push to host large-scale episodic television.

Cast and Creative Team

David Boreanaz leads an ensemble cast that brings fresh dynamics to the classic Los Angeles private-eye formula. The cast includes:

  • Michaela McManus as Kate, an East Hollywood detective with a complicated romantic history with Rockford tied to his past accusations of police framing.
  • Felix Solis as Nitty, a successful defense attorney who serves as Rockford’s best friend and a vital ally in the legal world.
  • Jacki Weaver as Rockford’s outspoken trailer-park neighbor, who doubles as an activist and think-tank analyst.
  • Jaden Boreanaz, the star’s son, who will make his acting debut roughing up his father’s character on screen.

Behind the camera, the series is written and executive produced by Mike Daniels. Greg Mottola directed the pilot and serves as an executive producer alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly through Universal Television. Chris Leanza rounds out the creative team as a co-executive producer.

Balancing Nostalgia with a Fresh Take

Speaking about taking on the legendary role, Boreanaz noted the careful balance the creative team is striking. They want to pay homage to James Garner’s iconic original portrayal while delivering something distinct for modern audiences. The revival will retain signature elements from the original run. These include Rockford’s classic vehicle, his iconic mobile trailer-home lifestyle, and his trademark blend of sarcastic humor, charm, and preference for talking his way out of trouble rather than resorting to violence.

Previous attempts to revive the intellectual property failed to materialize. These included a 2009 pilot starring Dermot Mulroney and a projected 2012 film starring Vince Vaughn. NBC’s firm commitment now marks the first time a revival has successfully cleared development hurdles. Fans can expect The Rockford Files to officially launch its episodes on NBC in January 2027.
