A passenger aboard Royal Caribbean International’s Odyssey of the Seas was rescued alive after spending approximately 20 hours adrift in open water near Zakynthos, Greece. The dramatic maritime rescue unfolded over the weekend following an overboard alert issued early Friday morning.
Details of the Overboard Incident
According to the Hellenic Coastguard, the incident occurred early Friday while the Odyssey of the Seas was sailing southwest of the Ionian island of Zakynthos. The vessel measures 1,138 feet long and holds a capacity for 4,198 guests, operating seasonal itineraries that explore the Greek Isles.
A coastguard spokesperson told AFP that the individual involved was a 44-year-old Salvadorian woman. Authorities stated that the passenger later reported she entered the water because she “wanted to disembark.” Following the alert, the cruise ship immediately joined the search efforts alongside local rescue forces.
Coordinated Search and Rescue Operation
The Hellenic Coastguard mounted an extensive search and rescue operation that lasted through the night and into Saturday morning. Assets deployed to the scene included:
- Two official Greek coastguard patrol boats
- A Hellenic Navy helicopter
- Rerouted commercial and nearby passenger vessels
- The Odyssey of the Seas itself
After nearly 20 hours in the open sea, a passing freighter spotted the woman floating inside an orange life ring early Saturday morning. A video released by the coastguard subsequently captured the tense moments as crew members threw a retrieval line to the survivor in the dark waters.
Medical Evaluation and Next Steps
The Greek coastguard patrol boat safely brought the woman aboard. Officials confirmed that she was fully conscious at the time of her rescue.
The patrol vessel transported her to the port of Katakolo. From there, she was transferred to a hospital in the nearby city of Pyrgos for comprehensive health screenings. According to coastguard officials, local prosecutors also ordered a psychiatric evaluation as part of standard protocols following the incident.
Cruise industry experts note that going overboard remains a rare occurrence. However, strict international protocols and multi-agency coordination-such as the cooperation seen between Greek authorities, commercial freighters, and Royal Caribbean-proved vital in achieving a successful survival outcome.
