Defensive depth remains a major concern for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. was officially ruled out for Thursday night’s divisional matchup against the Cleveland Browns. A fresh setback involving a recurring back injury derailed his expected progress. This keeps him sidelined for his fourth consecutive game of the 2026 NFL season.
Porter’s status shifted unexpectedly on Wednesday afternoon. The team formally added a back injury designation alongside his prior not-injury-related and conditioning status on the official injury report. This update came just a day after head coach Mike McCarthy expressed optimism regarding the cornerback’s availability following estimated full participation in Monday and Wednesday walkthrough sessions.
Shifting Injury Designations and Practice Participation
Porter’s sudden downgrade surprised observers who monitored his progression earlier in the week. Because Monday and Tuesday practices were structured as light walkthroughs, the participation reports served as estimations. However, team officials noted that Porter’s workload represented his first extensive reps since he was activated off the physically unable to perform list in late August.
The cornerback missed all of training camp and the preseason. He experienced a back injury aggravation during an initial mobility workout on the very first day of training camp. While conditioning and back flare-ups caused his prolonged absence, the situation unfolded against the backdrop of a stalled contract extension. Porter and the Steelers failed to reach an agreement before the team’s regular-season deadline. This leaves the final year of his rookie deal as his current contractual status.
Speaking to media members on September 24, Porter maintained that he would definitely play at some point this season. When asked about what was keeping him off the field, he pointed to a combination of factors.
“It’s both,” Porter said on Sept. 24. “My back has its moments where [there’s] a flare-up here and there, and we’re still just trying to get my conditioning down to just me being out there as much as possible.”
Broader Roster Adjustments for Thursday Night Football
Porter’s continued absence forces the Steelers to rely on alternative options within their defensive backfield. They must prepare to face the Cleveland Browns on a short week. Several other roster designations accompanied Wednesday’s final injury report:
- Jalen Ramsey (Defensive Back): Listed as questionable due to a broken wrist.
- Brandin Echols (Cornerback): Cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol but maintains a questionable game status.
- Rico Dowdle (Running Back): Officially ruled out for the second straight game due to a lingering toe injury.
On the opposing sideline, the Cleveland Browns made their own adjustments ahead of the divisional clash. The Browns ruled out starting center Elgton Jenkins due to a concussion. Meanwhile, starting cornerback Tyson Campbell cleared injury concerns and will play without an injury designation.
The Steelers enter the Week 4 contest holding a 2-1 record following a hard-fought 30-27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Kickoff for the Thursday Night Football matchup against the Browns is set to test Pittsburgh’s resilience. The coaching staff must navigate critical absences across both sides of the ball.
