Comedian and television presenter Joe Lycett is funding free drinks at 30 pubs across England and Wales. He is using his Channel 4 show platform to encourage customers to support local businesses amid widespread industry closures. Each participating venue is receiving a £100 bar tab funded directly by the 38-year-old entertainer. This initiative is expected to provide up to 500 pints for patrons.
Lycett announced the giveaway during the finale of his live Channel 4 programme, Live From The Lycett Arms, which is filmed inside a functional pub in east London. Viewers and local patrons can claim a complimentary beverage by asking for their order to be put on ‘Joe’s tab.’ However, availability at each location depends on when the allocated funds run out.
Supporting Local Communities Amid Rising Closures
The campaign responds to severe economic pressures facing the British hospitality sector. Industry data highlights ongoing struggles for independent venues. Trade bodies warn of continued closures across England, Scotland, and Wales driven by high tax burdens and operating costs.
Pub landlords have praised the initiative for highlighting the social value of local spaces. Ryan Peasland, landlord at The Somerset Inn in Chard, commended Lycett’s efforts to drive physical foot traffic rather than remote patronage. ‘In a world where digital connection is plentiful yet human connection is dwindling and loneliness growing, the pub remains a shining beacon for so many to find solace,’ Peasland noted.
Other venues have chosen to amplify the contribution. The Miller in London Bridge announced it would double Lycett’s £100 donation to a total of £200. Tab-covered drinks there are available to customers from 6 p.m.

The Message Behind the Pint
Closing his six-week run on Live From The Lycett Arms, Lycett urged viewers to prioritize community spaces over supermarket alternatives. ‘There are 45,000 pubs in the UK; go and give them some love,’ Lycett told viewers. ‘It’s only thanks to your custom that they’ll weather the storm and carry on serving us all. Think global, drink in your local.’
Alongside his Channel 4 broadcasting work, Lycett continues to appear on television screens nationwide. This includes a high-profile run as a contestant on the current series of BBC One’s The Celebrity Traitors.
