October 16, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

Suffolk Police have closed the Orwell Bridge in both directions following a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The incident, reported at 03:41 BST, resulted in a complete shutdown of this major route near Ipswich.

The closure affects the A14 between junction 56 (Wherstead) and junction 57 (Nacton interchange). Authorities expect this section of the road to remain closed for several hours while investigators conduct forensic work and recovery operations.

Diversion Routes and Traffic Management

Motorists are advised to avoid the area, as heavy congestion has already formed along the designated diversion routes. Commuters and freight drivers should expect significant delays.

Drivers should follow these established diversion paths:

  • Solid Triangle Signs: Exit the A14 at J55 (Copdock Mill). Follow the A1214 around Ipswich to the Woodbridge Road Roundabout. Take the second exit onto the A1189, continue to the Felixstowe Road A1156 roundabout, and proceed along the A1156 Felixstowe Road to rejoin the A14 at J58.
  • Solid Circle Signs: Exit the A14 at J58 onto the A1156 Felixstowe Road. At the A1189 roundabout, take the second exit. At the Woodbridge Road Roundabout, take the first exit onto the A1214. Follow this route around Ipswich to rejoin the A14 at J55 (Copdock Mill).

Ongoing Police Investigation

Suffolk Police are currently managing the scene and conducting investigations. While authorities have not yet released the identity or medical condition of the pedestrian, further updates are expected once initial procedures are complete.

Travelers in the region should monitor live traffic reports, allow extra time for their journeys, and exercise patience while emergency teams clear the route.
