El Salvador national football team head coach Hernan Dario “Bolillo” Gomez expects a tight Concacaf Nations League clash against Guatemala. Speaking at a Sunday press conference ahead of Monday’s fixture at El Trebol stadium, the Colombian manager emphasized that La Selecta is approaching the away encounter without overconfidence despite their recent win against Martinique.
“It has always been a very tight match. They have been very difficult games for us. We have always had great respect for Guatemala because of their capacity, their coaches, and their players,” Gomez told reporters.
Building Team Hierarchy and Weather Adaptability
Gomez discussed the standards needed for his squad to build competitive dominance internationally. He noted that a single positive result does not define a team’s standing.
“We are looking for hierarchy, and hierarchy is not given to you by one match. To have hierarchy, out of 10 matches you have to win eight,” Gomez stated.
When asked about potential weather issues in Guatemala City, the coach dismissed concerns, stating that both teams must adapt equally to the playing surface at Manuel Felipe Carrera Stadium.
“It doesn’t matter. The pitch will be the same for both. We have to overcome heat, rain, mud, everything,” he added.
Squad Availability and Managing External Pressure
Regarding squad fitness, Gomez confirmed that three key players remain doubtful for matchday due to physical ailments. Medical staff continue to monitor their recovery before kickoff.
“They are recovering, they are not yet determined for tomorrow. Let’s hope they improve, as there is still time today,” Gomez explained.
The manager also addressed external skepticism surrounding the national team, noting that public perception often fluctuates independently of internal progress and recent victories.
“We cannot live off what is said, but off what we work on. What Guatemala is experiencing today, we are experiencing too, even though we won, there is no credibility,” Gomez remarked, stressing the need to shield players from outside noise.
“We have to isolate ourselves a little bit from that and isolate the boys.”
