A34 Lane Restrictions and Severe Delays After Chieveley Crash

October 16, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

Motorists traveling through West Berkshire face severe delays on the A34 after a serious early morning collision near the Chieveley interchange on October 16. The crash caused lane closures in both directions near M4 Junction 13, slowing traffic to a crawl while emergency services and safety teams manage the scene.

Traffic monitors and local reports indicate that disruption began shortly after 5:00 AM. Queues quickly formed on the northbound carriageway between the A339 at Newbury North and the Beedon turn-off. By 5:30 AM, authorities confirmed that traffic restrictions were limiting movement to a single lane in each direction near the Chieveley roundabout.

Severe Delays and Travel Impact

The gridlock heavily impacted morning commuters. National Highways reported that northbound delays between the A34 and M4 Junction 13 reached up to two hours during the peak morning rush. Average travel speeds along the stretch dropped to five miles per hour.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area, allow extra travel time, or choose alternative routes while recovery and investigation work continues.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Thames Valley Police, National Highways officers, and local emergency services responded to the scene after the collision. An Air Ambulance was also sent to assist with medical care.

Current Status on the A34

Authorities expect lane restrictions to remain in place for several hours. Safety teams must assess and repair damage to roadside barriers, while collision investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the crash.

National Highways will provide updates regarding the full reopening of the carriageway as the recovery operation progresses.
