Tesla Unveils Next-Gen Roadster at SpaceX Test Site in Texas

October 16, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Tesla officially unveiled its redesigned next-generation Roadster on Thursday night at SpaceX’s rocket test site in McGregor, Texas. This came nearly nine years after the vehicle concept was first revealed in 2017. The high-profile demonstration highlighted heavy technological collaboration between Tesla and Elon Musk’s aerospace company, showcasing engineering feats that pushed the boundaries of traditional automotive design.

The livestreamed event began shortly before 8:00 p.m. local time near Waco, Texas. CEO Elon Musk was joined on stage by design leader Franz von Holzhausen and Lars Moravy, vice president of vehicle engineering. During the presentation, Musk told the audience they would witness the results of a partnership combining the world’s best car company with the world’s best rocket company.

SpaceX Technology Integration and Stunt Demonstration

The headline-grabbing feature of the new Roadster is its heavy integration of aerospace hardware. The demonstration vehicle utilized cold-gas thrusters borrowed directly from SpaceX, alongside a specialized suction and fan system. According to the live presentation, a prototype white sports car drove up a curved ramp, clung to it upside down, launched into the air, performed a mid-air flip, landed on the ground, and vaulted over several stationary Tesla vehicles.

Powered by these aeronautical technologies, Tesla claims the two-seater sports car can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second. The lightweight vehicle also features a steer-by-wire system, a steering yoke, carbon overlay pressure vessels, and diffusers. However, Musk noted on stage that the vehicle is built for extreme performance rather than everyday compliance. He stated, “This is not necessarily a safety-optimized car,” and confirmed it will not feature Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) automated driving system.

Production Timeline, Pricing, and Reservation Details

Tesla announced that production for the next-generation Roadster is scheduled to officially commence in 2028. The company has structured its reservation tiers with two distinct price points: a $50,000 deposit for the Performance version and a $250,000 deposit for the Thrust version. Reservations have been reopened to prospective buyers across the United States, Canada, and China.

The unveiling comes after an extended delay that saw the initial 2017 concept miss multiple targeted delivery milestones. Early reservation holders provided deposits nearly a decade ago. While they finally caught a glimpse of the production-intent vehicle, analysts note that the low-volume, high-end sports car is not expected to have a material financial impact on Tesla’s core financial performance.

Broader Industry Context and Corporate Speculation

The collaboration showcased at the McGregor test facility has further intensified market speculation regarding a potential corporate merger between Tesla and SpaceX. Both companies have shared personnel, cross-developed technology, and conducted business transactions for years. This speculation has grown following SpaceX’s public offering in June. Analysts and industry figures suggest a tie-up could align the operations of Musk’s multi-trillion-dollar enterprises.

As Tesla looks toward the targeted 2028 production launch, enthusiasts and reservation holders will be watching to see how much of the aerospace-inspired stunt capability translates into the final street-legal configuration of the long-awaited electric vehicle.
