Google Maps Adds Live UK Fuel Prices to Help Drivers Save

October 8, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Google Maps began showing live petrol and diesel prices at UK forecourts on 8 October. This update allows motorists to compare nearby pump prices directly through the navigation app. The rollout arrives as fuel costs remain elevated across the country, providing millions of drivers with an accessible tool to identify cheaper fuel using government data.

Enhancing Price Transparency on UK Roads

The new feature relies on data from the UK government’s Fuel Finder platform, which displays real-time pricing at 99% of forecourts nationwide. By searching for a local forecourt in the Google app or Google Maps, motorists can view up-to-date costs for petrol and diesel. This move is expected to significantly increase pricing transparency and stimulate competition among fuel retailers.

The integration arrives at a time of severe financial strain for road users. The average price of diesel in the UK recently reached a record-high £2 a litre, having climbed more than 40% since late February amid global supply pressures.

Industry Reactions and Motoring Group Support

Motoring organizations have welcomed the update as a major step forward for consumer rights. Edmund King, president of the AA, noted that wider digital access to live pump prices makes cheaper retailers far easier to identify.

“Getting transparent fuel prices on to Google Maps is a massive step forward and means most drivers will have easy access to pump prices. Hopefully, this high-level pump-price transparency will also encourage more competitive prices from retailers,” said Edmund King, AA President.

King added that increased transparency should help reduce rampant price-matching strategies seen across many local fuel stations. This allows competitive forecourts that break rank to stand out more clearly to budget-conscious drivers.

Government Backing and Market Impact

The government’s Fuel Finder scheme originally launched in February following key recommendations made by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in 2023. While the data is already accessible through specialized apps like Waze, PetrolPrices, the AA, Confused.com, and RAC Fuel Watch, Google’s massive user base is expected to amplify its reach.

Polly Billington, the minister for energy consumers, praised the integration:

“Accessing the cheapest fuel should be simple, which is why it is a gamechanger for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers find the best deal and save money at the pump.”

The CMA previously cautioned fuel retailers in August, warning that many operations were slow to pass on wholesale price drops to consumers. Regulators hope that bringing real-time data to ubiquitous mapping platforms will dismantle passive pricing tactics and help lower household motoring expenses.

How to Check Live Fuel Prices on Google Maps

Drivers looking to use the new feature can follow a few simple steps within the application:

  • Open the Google Maps or Google app on your mobile device.
  • Search for terms like “petrol station,” “diesel,” or the name of a specific local forecourt.
  • Review the listed real-time per-litre prices displayed directly alongside the location details.
  • Select the most cost-effective option and tap directions to navigate straight to the pump.
