Family tensions have intensified significantly in Emmerdale as the village prepares for the upcoming release of Samson Dingle from prison. Producer Sophie Roper has confirmed that the ITV soap is revisiting Samson’s dramatic exit storyline, bringing old wounds and simmering feuds back to the surface at Wishing Well Cottage.
The trouble begins when Moira Dingle invites her son, Matty Barton, to move into the crowded Dingle household after he struggles to sleep at Emmerdale Farm due to a crying baby. However, this move directly conflicts with the living arrangements that Sam and Lydia Dingle had already established, having earmarked Matty’s allocated room for Samson’s imminent return from behind bars.
Why Is Samson Dingle in Prison?
Samson, played by actor Sam Hall, was sentenced to four years in prison in August 2024 following a dark and controversial storyline. He had fallen under the influence of troublemaker Josh Cope, who targeted Matty Barton with vicious transphobic abuse at The Hide.
During an ensuing altercation, Josh shoved Samson into Matty, who was holding a kitchen knife. This resulted in Samson suffering an accidental stab wound. Coerced by Josh, Samson falsely told the police that Matty had deliberately attacked him. The lie led to Matty being remanded in custody, where he faced terrifying circumstances while trying to protect his identity as a transgender man.
Months later, Samson’s conscience finally won out. He confessed the truth to his family and the police, allowing Matty to be freed. Samson was subsequently arrested, charged with perverting the course of justice, and handed a four-year custodial sentence.
Dingle Family Divided Over the Return
As word spreads that Samson could be released early for good behaviour, deep divisions emerge within the family. Moira remains fiercely unforgiving toward Samson for the severe ordeal he put Matty through. Her staunch stance quickly alienates her from other members of the household.
"There's a really difficult journey for Sam and Lydia amid the expectation of Samson's return," Emmerdale producer Sophie Roper revealed in an Inside Soap interview. "It will lead us into some quite tense dynamics in the Dingle household, where Sam, Lydia, Cain and Moira are all living. It brings all of that to a head and challenges the relationships between those two couples!"
Despite the history and the fierce feud between Moira, Sam, and Lydia over the spare room, an unexpected voice of reason steps forward. Matty himself takes a surprisingly calm approach, urging his mother to move on from the past and forgive Samson. However, whether Moira can truly put the trauma behind her remains to be seen as the village braces for Samson’s controversial homecoming.
What Lies Ahead in Emmerdale
Sam Hall bowed out from his 15-year tenure as Samson in August 2024, expressing gratitude to the cast, crew, and fans in a farewell message. Now, his character’s looming presence threatens to tear the Dingles apart all over again. With living spaces at a premium and old loyalties tested to their limits, viewers can expect explosive scenes as the fallout from Samson’s time in prison unfolds on screen.
