A 71-year-old fisherman died after an alligator dragged him into the water at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Winter Garden, Florida. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening near Lake Apopka, located approximately 15 miles northwest of Orlando, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Details of the Fatal Attack in Winter Garden

Local authorities and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) identified the victim as Steven Hamilton, a resident of Winter Garden. The attack took place at approximately 5 p.m. as Hamilton fished from the shoreline in Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, a public space featuring several small ponds connected to the larger Lake Apopka.

According to Winter Garden Police Captain Michael Mason, the alligator approached the shoreline, attacked Hamilton, and pulled him directly into the water. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following a 911 call received at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Winter Garden Fire Chief José Gainza reported that rescue and recovery efforts proved exceptionally difficult due to the presence of multiple other active alligators in the water. Crews ultimately recovered Hamilton’s body at approximately 7 p.m.

Wildlife Officials Capture and Remove the Alligator

Following the attack, professional wildlife trappers tracked down the reptile believed to be responsible. The FWC confirmed that the alligator measured 11 feet, 8 inches-nearly 12 feet in length. Trappers captured and euthanized the animal at the scene to eliminate any ongoing danger to the public.

Captain Mason emphasized the importance of caution around local waterways, reminding residents and visitors that Lake Apopka maintains a dense alligator population. “Always be aware of your surroundings, always be safe. Local wildlife – respect it, keep your distance,” Mason stated during a press briefing. “It looks like it’s docile, it looks like your Florida emblem, but it can be dangerous.”

Alligator Safety and Historical Context in Florida

Florida is home to an estimated 1.3 million American alligators, which inhabit fresh and brackish water bodies across all 67 counties in the state. Despite their widespread presence, unprovoked attacks on humans remain relatively rare.

According to historical data maintained by the FWC dating back to 1948, the state has recorded approximately 500 alligator bites involving humans, resulting in 32 fatalities. Fatal incidents typically average between zero and three per calendar year. State wildlife authorities continue to urge extreme vigilance, particularly near lakes, ponds, swamps, and marshes throughout the region.
