A dispute between two men turned deadly at a busy Midtown Manhattan subway station on a Saturday afternoon. The incident resulted in the fatal shooting of a man on the northbound E train platform, according to the New York Police Department.
The shooting occurred shortly after noon, at approximately 12:21 p.m., at the 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue station. According to investigators, the confrontation began on the platform. It then spilled onto an incoming train that had just opened its doors, before moving back onto the platform where the gunfire erupted.
Police responded to reports of gunfire and found an adult male victim in his 30s suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. First responders and bystanders administered CPR on the platform. Emergency medical personnel then transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m. Authorities have withheld the victim’s identity pending family notification.
Investigation and Suspect Details
NYPD Deputy Chief Keith Shine confirmed that the shooting was not random. He noted that the victim, the gunman, and a third individual had argued prior to the violence. No weapon was recovered at the scene.
Surveillance footage shows the suspect fleeing on foot and heading northbound on Seventh Avenue. The NYPD described the suspect as wearing a red tracksuit or red pants and a red hoodie, paired with a black jacket or puffer vest and a black face mask or balaclava. Law enforcement considers the suspect armed and dangerous.
Transit Disruptions and Safety Concerns
The incident caused significant delays and service alterations across the MTA network. C, D, and E trains bypassed the Seventh Avenue station in both directions. Additionally, E trains were rerouted onto the F line between West Fourth Street-Washington Square and 47th-50th Streets-Rockefeller Center.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper issued a statement condemning the violence. "Guns have no place in transit, which is why we’ve strongly supported New York State’s legal fight to make sure it’s illegal to carry them in the subway system," Kemper said. He added that the MTA is fully cooperating with the NYPD to review surveillance footage.
The tragedy highlights ongoing public anxiety regarding transit safety. This shooting marks the seventh murder in the New York City transit system for the year, reflecting a notable rise in transit-related homicides compared to the previous year.
