Actor Paul Bettany has challenged the public perception that he maintained a close friendship with Johnny Depp, addressing the fallout from private text messages that became evidence in Depp’s high-profile 2020 libel case against British tabloid The Sun.
Speaking to The Times following the premiere of his Marvel Television series VisionQuest, Bettany revealed that he had not spoken to Depp for years before the controversial correspondence emerged, nor has he communicated with him since. The text messages, originally exchanged between the two actors in 2013, drew intense public scrutiny due to their disturbing references directed at Amber Heard, Depp’s former wife.
“It was a very interesting time,” Bettany told The Times. “I hadn’t spoken to Johnny in years when that happened, and I haven’t spoken to him since. I was being painted as this close friend of a guy I hadn’t spoken to in years and, honestly, amid all the s-t two celebrities threw at each other, that bit was the most odd.”
The Origins of the Text Message Controversy
The private correspondence between Bettany and Depp was made public in February 2020 during court hearings for Depp’s libel lawsuit against News Group Newspapers, the publisher of The Sun. Depp sued the publication over a 2018 article that labeled him a “wife-beater” in connection with domestic abuse allegations made by Heard.
During the trial, court documents revealed a 2013 text exchange in which Depp suggested burning Heard. Bettany replied with dark humor, suggesting an alternative “English course of action” involving a “drowning test” to determine if she was a witch, to which Depp responded with further graphic remarks.
Presiding judge Mr Justice Nicol ultimately ruled against Depp, finding that the publication’s description of the actor was substantially true after citing evidence of 12 separate incidents of domestic violence.
Why Bettany Remained Silent
Despite being thrust into the center of a global media storm, Bettany chose not to issue immediate public statements addressing the controversy. Reflecting on that decision, the actor explained that he relied on his long-established personal reputation.
“So I decided to say nothing because, I think, people know me,” Bettany said. “I’ve been married 23 years and, for what I do, I live an incredibly quiet life. Everybody kind of thought this is probably a nothing burger – and left it alone.”
While Bettany and Depp developed a professional working relationship after collaborating on films such as The Tourist (2010), Transcendence (2014), and Mortdecai (2015), the British actor drew a strict boundary between professional overlap and personal intimacy, emphasizing that he had no involvement in or firsthand knowledge of Depp and Heard’s marriage.

Bettany’s recent comments coincide with the rollout of VisionQuest, his latest Disney+ series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reprising his role as the synthezoid, Bettany has focused his recent media engagements on promoting the show and returning to a quieter public profile, effectively drawing a line under a tumultuous chapter of unintended association with one of Hollywood’s most contentious legal battles.
