The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has issued a strong public clarification to shut down false social media rumors regarding a devastating crash at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 17, involved a vehicle that drove onto a crowded youth soccer field and high school flag football championship event, resulting in two deaths and 10 injuries.
In the wake of the tragedy, unverified online posts began circulating claims that Deputy Rachel Taylor was behind the wheel of the vehicle. The sheriff’s office addressed these allegations directly, confirming that the rumors are entirely unfounded.
“We want to make it clear that Deputy Rachel Taylor was not the driver of the vehicle involved in this incident,” the sheriff’s office stated in a public announcement. Authorities condemned the spread of misinformation, calling it irresponsible and noting that it causes additional, unnecessary harm to the grieving families and victims.
Details of the Stryker Sports Complex Incident
According to the Wichita Police Department, the driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. The vehicle had been parked near the field before it barreled into children and adults around 3:30 p.m. local time. Two of the driver’s own children were inside the vehicle at the time, and a third child was participating in the games.
The crash claimed the lives of 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both hailing from McPherson, Kansas. Neither victim was related, and both were pronounced dead at the scene. Ten other individuals, ranging in age from 5 to 68 years old, sustained traumatic injuries and were transported to local hospitals. An 11th person, a 61-year-old woman, was hospitalized for unrelated medical complications.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeals
Following the crash, police took the 34-year-old driver into custody. After conducting more than 30 witness interviews, including speaking with the children inside the truck, and consulting with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office, authorities released the woman pending further investigation.
No formal charges have been filed as investigators await the final results of toxicology testing and a comprehensive mechanical examination of the pickup truck. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan emphasized that officers are working diligently to determine the exact circumstances that led to the vehicle entering the athletic field.
Law enforcement officials continue to urge the public and social media users to rely strictly on verified information released by the Wichita Police Department rather than unconfirmed rumors. Anyone seeking accurate updates is encouraged to monitor official municipal and law enforcement channels as the investigation proceeds.
