Former X Factor star Ray Quinn and his wife, Emily, have spoken publicly about the devastating stillbirth of their baby son, Rio. They aim to raise awareness of pregnancy and baby loss and encourage other grieving families to seek support.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on October 19, 2026, the couple shared their heartbreaking experience. They expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and organizations who helped guide them through the trauma. The couple initially expected their baby boy to arrive in December. However, they discovered during a routine medical examination six months into the pregnancy that his heart had stopped beating.
Rio was born sleeping on August 20, 2026, an announcement the couple later shared on social media. Reflecting on the tragedy during their interview and in a dedicated video on their YouTube channel, “THE QUINNS,” they explained that Emily had an anterior placenta, which can make fetal movements harder to detect. After noticing a decrease in movement and feeling that her bump appeared smaller, Emily grew concerned and requested a scan.
“When she put the scan on my stomach, she just closed her eyes and said, ‘Em, I’m so sorry, but there’s no heartbeat there,'” Emily recalled, describing the moment their world stopped. Medical examinations later revealed that Rio’s umbilical cord had been tied in a tight knot, a rare occurrence that would not have been flagged during standard scans.
Raising Awareness and Finding Support
Despite their immense grief, Emily noted that sharing their story has become a way to help others facing similar tragedies. She also disclosed that she experienced a miscarriage the previous year, adding to the emotional weight of their journey.
The couple publicly thanked the staff at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and the HoneySuckle team for their compassionate care during what they described as the most heartbreaking week of their lives. Ray emphasized that finding out how much help and support is available has been a vital lifeline.
By opening up about their loss, Ray and Emily hope to break the lingering taboos surrounding baby loss. They encourage parents to speak openly about their experiences to aid the healing process.
