Investigators Link Herndon to Second St. Louis Roadway Shooting

October 25, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Federal and local investigators examining the tragic death of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson are now probing a potential connection to a second roadway incident in the St. Louis area. Willie Herndon, a 43-year-old from Arlington, Texas, faces first-degree murder charges in Wilson’s October 14, 2026, fatal shooting. He is also under active investigation for a separate episode of gunfire reported just three days earlier.

According to a federal criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, ballistic evidence has drawn the attention of law enforcement agencies. A spent cartridge casing recovered near the site of an October 11 shooting shared the same manufacturer identification-MaxxTech 23 7.62×39 ammunition-as a casing collected after Wilson was killed on Interstate 170.

Ballistic Evidence Connects Incidents

The October 11 incident in St. Louis proper resulted in no reported injuries. However, federal court documents detail striking similarities. Investigators state that a vehicle exiting Interstate 55 near Bates Avenue was struck by a single bullet. Surveillance footage from the area captured a white SUV stopped along the highway shoulder that fled the scene immediately after the gunfire erupted.

Laboratory testing is underway to determine whether microscopic ballistic markings establish a definitive link proving both incidents involved the same firearm. Law enforcement officials emphasize that while the ammunition brand matches, conclusive forensic confirmation is still pending.

Details of the Investigation Into Alyssa Wilson’s Death

Alyssa Wilson, a high school student from Florissant, Missouri, was driving to a Halloween event at the St. Louis Zoo when her vehicle was targeted on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri. Authorities state that a white Buick Enclave pulled over to the right shoulder. A suspect then stepped out and fired a single round into the rear of Wilson’s car. The bullet penetrated the vehicle and struck the teenager, leaving her incapacitated and causing her car to crash into the median.

Emergency responders rushed Wilson to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her tragic death prompted an intensive multi-agency manhunt involving the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, local police, and federal partners.

Investigators used surveillance footage and vehicle decals-including an Arkansas Razorbacks sticker-to trace the suspect vehicle to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois. Law enforcement apprehended Taiya Herndon, Willie’s wife, near the vehicle. Willie Herndon was captured following a brief foot pursuit. Inside their hotel room, authorities recovered an American Built Custom Rifle Company AR-15 style rifle loaded with the same MaxxTech ammunition found at both shooting scenes.

Court Appearances and Legal Proceedings

Willie Herndon faces state charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He also faces federal counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm due to prior convictions in California for vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, and felony burglary.

Taiya Herndon is charged at the state level with hindering prosecution for allegedly driving her husband to Illinois following the October 14 attack. Both defendants are being held on substantial cash bonds as court proceedings advance in Missouri and Illinois jurisdictions.

As prosecutors build their case, the ongoing ballistic analysis into the October 11 roadway shooting highlights the expanding scope of the investigation into Herndon’s activities across the St. Louis highway system.
