A Missouri couple faces criminal charges in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson. Wilson was driving on Interstate 170 toward the St. Louis Zoo to meet a friend when gunfire struck her vehicle on October 14. St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith announced the charges Monday. Investigators confirmed the couple had no known relationship with the teenager.
Willie Herndon, 43, has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His wife, Taiya Herndon, 45, faces a charge of hindering prosecution. She allegedly transported him to Illinois after the shooting, according to Prosecutor Price Smith.
Incident Details on Interstate 170
Court records state that a gunshot struck the rear of Wilson’s vehicle. The impact left her incapacitated and caused her to crash into the highway’s concrete median wall. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. in Overland, northwest of St. Louis. Wilson was traveling to attend the St. Louis Zoo’s Halloween event known as “Boo at the Zoo.”
According to Jack Abell, chief deputy commander of the region’s Major Case Squad, surveillance footage showed a white Buick Enclave stopped on the shoulder. A person exited the vehicle, stood outside briefly, fired a single round into the rear of Wilson’s red Buick Encore, and got back inside. The vehicle then drove away with its hazard lights off.
First responders arrived at the scene near Midland Boulevard and transported Wilson to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Arrest and Investigation in Illinois
Investigators utilized surveillance footage and automated license-plate readers to trace the suspect vehicle to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois. The hotel is located approximately 12 miles from St. Louis. Authorities maintained surveillance on the location for hours before arresting the couple on Friday.
A judge-approved search of the hotel room uncovered a firearm and supporting evidence linked to the crime. During interviews with law enforcement, Willie Herndon provided details regarding his involvement and information concerning ongoing investigations in other areas. Bail was set at $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for Taiya Herndon, payable in full.
Family and Community Impact
During a joint press conference on Monday, Wilson’s father, Robert Hickman, shared that his daughter was a senior at McCluer North High School and only 60 days away from turning 18. He stated that the family had been preparing for their first vacation together to Disney so Wilson could see her favorite character, Princess Tiana.
“Alyssa was 17, excited about her life, excited about her future,” Robert Hickman said. “We were getting ready to take our first family vacation together to go to Disney for her to see her favorite person in the world, Princess Tiana. Unfortunately, she’s not going to get to do that anymore. This was a senseless act.”
Law enforcement officials credited collaborative efforts between the FBI, ATF, and local agencies for solving the case within 36 hours. Prosecutors and investigators continue to analyze recovered evidence and evaluate whether the suspects are linked to other unresolved incidents.
