Vatican Clears Pope Leo XIV for November South America Tour

Pope Leo XIV will travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17, 2026. The Vatican confirmed on October 26 that his recovery from lung cancer surgery is progressing well. Medical examinations found no obstacles to the 71-year-old pontiff undertaking the 12-day apostolic journey as scheduled.

The Holy See Press Office announced that the trip will follow its previously published program without any modifications. According to itinerary details released by the Vatican and CBS News, the demanding voyage spans 10 cities and requires 14 flights. It features numerous public appearances, religious ceremonies, and high-altitude engagements, including a planned visit to Cuzco, Peru, which sits more than 11,000 feet above sea level.

Medical Clearance Following Successful Surgery

The medical green light comes less than a month after Pope Leo underwent surgery on October 13 at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. Doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung after discovering a malignant tumor identified as lung adenocarcinoma. The Vatican reported that the operation was successful and completely without complications.

Subsequent examinations confirmed that the cancer was fully localized. No further oncological treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiation, is necessary. Dr. Luigi Carbone and lead surgeon Stefano Margaritora confirmed that the Pope’s clinical condition is entirely satisfactory. They stated there are no medical contraindications preventing him from undertaking the extensive international itinerary.

The 12-day apostolic journey carries profound personal and symbolic significance for the pontiff, who spent two decades serving as a missionary and bishop in Peru. The structured schedule encompasses three distinct stages:

  • Uruguay (November 6-8): Visiting Montevideo, Paysandú, and Florida. This marks the first papal visit to the country since St. John Paul II traveled there in 1988.
  • Argentina (November 8-11): Stopping in Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján. The visit is especially momentous as Argentina is the homeland of Pope Francis and has not hosted a pontiff since 1987.
  • Peru (November 11-17): Spanning Lima, Chiclayo, Cuzco, and Pucallpa. This represents the longest leg of the tour and a return to the Pope’s former mission territory.

Gradual Resumption of Papal Duties

Following his discharge from the hospital on October 17, Pope Leo has gradually resumed his daily responsibilities. He adjusted his schedule in close consultation with medical advisors to prioritize his recovery. Although doctors advised the cancellation of a planned day trip to Assisi on October 27, his overall stamina has rebounded sufficiently for the South American tour.

In a formal statement released by the Holy See, the pontiff expressed profound anticipation for the journey. “I am looking forward to returning to the continent where I’ve experienced so many moments of my life,” Pope Leo XIV stated. He also added his deep gratitude for the global outpouring of prayers and affection from the faithful.
