Class will remain in session at Hillman College! Netflix has officially renewed its hit sequel series ‘A Different World’ for a second season. The streaming platform made this swift decision just eight days after the beloved franchise returned with a new generation of students.
Led by Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne-the daughter of original series icons Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne-the revival has quickly made its mark. According to Netflix, Season 1 debuted at No. 4 on its Global Top 10 English TV chart. It pulled in 4.2 million views and reached the Top 10 across 15 countries.
What to Expect in Season 2 at Hillman College
When the show returns for its sophomore year, viewers can expect plenty of campus chaos. Season 2 picks up following the students’ transformative summers. Deborah and her classmates return to Hillman armed with a “New Year, New Me” mindset. Naturally, old decisions, new romances, shifting friendships, and fresh layers of college drama await them.
The freshman class features a diverse ensemble alongside Moon, including:
- Rashida Duvall (played by Alijah Kai), a first-generation criminal justice major.
- Shaquille Johnson (played by Cornell Young IV), a five-star athlete choosing legacy.
- Amir Rodale (played by Jordan Aaron Hall), a sharp psych major better at fixing everyone else’s problems than facing his own.
- Hazel Henry (played by Kennedi Reece), a church-raised small-town girl defining her own values.
- Kojo Achebe (played by Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur finding the courage to follow his vision.
Fans of the 1987-1993 NBC classic have also celebrated the return of original cast favorites, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Darryl M. Bell, and Cree Summer. The series also features special appearances by Jada Pinkett Smith, Glynn Turman, and Jenifer Lewis.
Creative Team Celebrates the Fast Renewal
The lightning-fast pickup has energized the creative team behind the camera. Executive producer and director Debbie Allen celebrated the news with trademark enthusiasm:
“YAY! HALLELUJAH! The people and NETFLIX have spoken. A Different World brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and HEART! Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide! And now, gear up! We’re coming back at you with Season 2!!”
Creator, showrunner, and executive producer Felicia Pride echoed that excitement, stating, “It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience. We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations.”
The revival’s cultural footprint extends beyond television. Its opening theme song, a fresh rendition recorded by R&B icon Brandy, has already amassed more than 1.3 million global streams.
Netflix has not yet announced an official premiere date for Season 2 of ‘A Different World’, but Season 1 is currently streaming worldwide.
