An Air Force airman died Saturday night after falling during a military rappelling demonstration before a college football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Naval Academy at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The service member sustained fatal injuries during the pregame event, which served as part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans game, according to statements released by the Air Force.
A spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base confirmed that the deceased service member was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2. Out of respect for the family, the Air Force withheld the airman’s identity immediately following the incident. Emergency responders from the San Antonio Fire Department transported the injured individual with life-threatening injuries to a local medical facility, where the airman later succumbed to the injuries.
Details of the Alamodome Pregame Incident
The tragic accident occurred just before kickoff at approximately 7 p.m. inside the Alamodome. A four-person military rappel team prepared to descend from the stadium’s rafters, located roughly 150 to 180 feet above the field, as part of the pregame coin toss ceremony.
Witnesses inside the stadium reported that approximately halfway through the descent, one of the service members slid down the rope in an uncontrolled manner before crashing hard onto the turf. UTSA staff and medical personnel quickly rushed to the fallen airman, forming a protective semicircle while administering emergency first aid for roughly 10 minutes. They then loaded him onto a stretcher and carried him out through the stadium tunnel.
The sudden and shocking nature of the accident stunned the crowd of 23,297 attendees. The pregame ceremony paused completely, and stadium officials temporarily delayed the start of the game by about 10 minutes to allow emergency personnel to clear the field.
Unit Background and Official Responses
The rappel team consisted of members from Detachment 2 of the 6th Combat Training Squadron. While the squadron is headquartered out of Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, Detachment 2 operates locally from the Chapman Training Annex at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland and Camp Bullis in northern Bexar County. This specialized unit trains Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) members, who are airmen that embed with Army and Marine units to direct and coordinate airstrikes and artillery from ground positions.
Following the tragedy, athletic and conference leadership issued statements expressing profound grief. UTSA Athletics shared an official statement: “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at the start of tonight’s game. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the soldier who was affected, his family and his military colleagues.”
The American Conference also released a statement offering condolences and emphasizing that support services are being activated for witnesses and university community members impacted emotionally by the incident. UTSA activated 24/7 crisis hotlines and wellbeing services for students, faculty, and staff.
The incident remains under active investigation by the United States Air Force. Military authorities will release additional details as they become available.
