Top-seeded Filipina tennis player Alex Eala has secured a guaranteed medal after advancing to the women’s singles semifinals at the 2026 Asian Games. Eala defeated Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland 7-5, 6-0 on Wednesday, September 30, at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Japan, continuing her strong run in the continental tournament.
The world No. 18 tennis star overcame a tight opening set where she initially trailed 5-4. Showing resilience, Eala claimed nine consecutive games to close out the match in 1 hour and 49 minutes. The victory guarantees her at least a bronze medal, improving upon her previous campaign, and keeps her firmly on track in her quest for an Asian Games gold medal.
Overcoming Early Obstacles in Japan
Despite the straight-set scoreline, victory did not come easily for the tournament’s top seed. Garland challenged Eala with a strong service game in the first frame before the Filipina broke through in the 11th game to edge ahead 6-5, eventually taking the set.
The second set showcased complete dominance by Eala, who did not allow her opponent-ranked No. 168 globally-a foothold in the match. Eala finished with 77 total points, outperforming Garland and converting seven of her 15 break-point chances. Her journey to the semifinals also included an opening-round 6-1, 6-0 win over Thailand’s Patcharin Cheapchandej on September 28.
“And at the end of the day, being a professional tennis player and a competitive tennis player, losing comes. You have to understand that losing is part of the job and losing is always a possibility,” Eala said reflecting on the match. “Representing my country and playing these types of games, SEA Games, Asian Games and hopefully the Olympics, they’re very close to my heart.”
Weighing Professional Commitments and National Pride
Eala’s decision to compete in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games came with professional stakes. The 21-year-old risked a $10,000 fine from the WTA by choosing to represent the Philippines instead of participating in the concurrently running China Open. However, representing her country and pursuing pathways toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics remain paramount priorities for the young athlete.
Having previously won a double bronze at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Eala’s breakout 2026 season also features historic milestones, including becoming the first Filipino player to win a WTA singles title at the Mubadala DC Open.
Upcoming Semifinal Matchup
With a podium finish locked in, Eala advances to face fourth-seed Wang Xiyu of China in the semifinals. Wang secured her spot by defeating local player Moyuka Uchijima 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Eala will look to carry her momentum forward as she aims to upgrade her medal color and move one step closer to the ultimate prize.
