Anthony Gordon believes his high-profile transfer to FC Barcelona has fundamentally altered how his playing style is viewed in England. The 25-year-old English winger, who completed a major move to the Catalan club, admits he feels his overall football intelligence and technical ability were frequently overshadowed during his time in the Premier League.
Speaking in an interview with ITV Football, Gordon reflected on the reputation he built while playing for Newcastle United. During his spell in northeastern England, his game was routinely characterized by high-tempo pressing, aggressive ball-carrying, and relentless pace. However, the forward argues that those physical traits masked his deeper understanding of the game.
"I think I've become a different player in the eyes of a lot of people because in England I always felt that I was respected for being fast and pressing, but they never really respected the quality and intelligence with which I play," Gordon told ITV Football.
A Different Tactical Platform at Camp Nou
Transitioning from the high-octane, transitional style of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle to Barcelona’s possession-dominant, positional framework has provided Gordon with an entirely different platform. At Barcelona, where technical proficiency is non-negotiable, the Englishman notes that subtle tactical nuances are brought into sharper focus.
"At Barcelona, if you're not skilful or intelligent, you'll stick out like a sore thumb straight away," Gordon explained, pointing out that the club's demanding environment leaves no room for players who rely purely on athleticism.
When asked whether the shift in public perception stems directly from his move to Spain, Gordon was candid. He stated that he never felt fully respected in his homeland, where analysts and fans frequently reduced his profile to a pace-and-power winger. In contrast, he feels Spanish football immediately welcomed and appreciated his technical composure.
Motivations Behind the €70 Million Transfer
Barcelona secured Gordon’s services in a blockbuster deal worth €70 million, with an additional €10 million structured in variables. The winger subsequently committed his long-term future to the Blaugrana by signing a contract running until 2031.
Beyond escaping his pigeonholed reputation in England, Gordon confessed that the desire to test himself abroad was a primary driving force behind the transfer. He wanted an environment that would force him out of his comfort zone and allow him to showcase his complete repertoire on the European stage.
"I felt I had more to offer than people thought I did, and I wanted to prove it on the world's biggest stage. Going abroad was very important to me," he said.
