The Chicago Bears face a major challenge ahead of their Monday Night Football matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. They are dealing with a rapidly unfolding quarterback crisis at Soldier Field.
Starting quarterback Caleb Williams is expected to miss multiple weeks due to a Grade 2 right hamstring strain. Williams sustained the injury during the fourth quarter of Chicago’s 9-3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Initial concerns suggested a more severe issue, but head coach Ben Johnson has listed the franchise quarterback as week-to-week. This keeps him out of action for his first missed game since being drafted first overall in 2024.
The situation worsened when primary backup Tyson Bagent suffered a concussion during the same game against Minnesota. Bagent cleared the NFL’s five-step concussion protocol and returned to practice. However, reports from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer indicate that the team will turn to 15-year veteran Case Keenum to make the start against Philadelphia.
Weighing Options Under Center
According to team assessments, Bagent did not have enough time to prepare for the Eagles defense after missing significant reps in protocol. This leaves the 38-year-old Keenum in line for his first regular-season start since December 2023. Keenum brings extensive experience with 66 career starts across 80 appearances. He provides a steady emergency option who can manage the playbook through timing passes, play-action schemes, and a strong ground game.
If Keenum struggles against Philadelphia’s defense, Bagent will be available on the bench as the primary backup. Meanwhile, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio stated that his unit is preparing for Chicago’s offensive system as a whole. They are focusing heavily on shoring up a run defense that struggled against the Bears in past meetings.

Shifting Focus to the Ground Game
With an unsettled quarterback room, the Bears may lean heavily on their rushing attack, much like they did in last year’s 24-15 upset win over Philadelphia. In that matchup, D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai both rushed for over 100 yards, securing a victory despite a low passing output.
Chicago enters the contest at 1-1, looking to bounce back from an offensive collapse against Minnesota. The Eagles stand at 2-0 but have experienced their own early-season offensive struggles. This sets the stage for a high-stakes, nationally televised battle where execution on the ground and defensive discipline will likely dictate the outcome.
