Ben Affleck recently offered a candid perspective on his two high-profile ex-wives, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner. Speaking during an extensive interview with Variety about his production company, Artists Equity, the 54-year-old actor and filmmaker discussed the shifting entertainment industry, modern branding, and the hard work required for performers to build value outside of traditional acting roles.
Recognizing the Business Acumen of His Exes
During the conversation, Affleck touched upon how contemporary performers are expected to function as businesses and public brands. He noted that artists-particularly in the music and digital spaces-are expected to generate revenue streams beyond their core cinematic or musical outputs.
Pointing to his former partners, Affleck highlighted the impressive digital footprint and commercial savviness of both Jennifer Lopez, 57, and Jennifer Garner, 54.
“Artists should be making money. You see it massively in the music business. People are expected to make money elsewhere,” Affleck told Variety. “Now you’ve got your social media identity. You work to develop that. I’ve seen both Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner do amazing jobs cultivating and accruing value in those spaces. Don’t think that’s not real work. I couldn’t do it. What am I going to do, unbox something?”
Affleck was married to Garner from 2005 to 2015, and the former couple shares three children: Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel. Years later, he rekindled his romance with Lopez, whom he originally dated in the early aughts. The pair married in 2022 before Lopez filed for divorce in August 2024, with legal proceedings finalized in early 2025.
Addressing Jennifer Lopez’s Film Career and Industry Snubs
Beyond digital branding, Affleck defended Lopez’s acting capabilities, addressing her historic awards season oversights for major projects like Hustlers (2019) and the 2025 drama The Kiss of the Spider Woman, a project on which Affleck served as a producer.
“I’m biased. I have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for what she can do,” Affleck remarked. He added that commercial success and award recognition do not always align with his personal tastes, dismissing industry awards as merely “a bunch of people voting on movie prizes.”
Despite the end of their marriage, Affleck has consistently maintained a respectful public posture toward Lopez. Earlier, he praised her dedication to his children and her personal integrity, cementing a narrative of mutual respect after navigating a high-profile Hollywood separation.
Evolution of Artists Equity and Modern Content
Affleck’s comments about social media and personal branding tie directly into the mission of Artists Equity, the production studio he launched with longtime friend and collaborator Matt Damon. The company operates with a business model that focuses on traditional filmmaking while incorporating branded content and advertising divisions designed to help creators navigate the digital economy.
By pointing to figures like Garner and Lopez as benchmarks for digital value creation, Affleck underscored a broader industry truth: today’s most successful entertainers must master multiple mediums to maintain longevity, cultural relevance, and financial independence.
