A fast-moving brush fire erupted in the Santa Clarita area on Sunday afternoon. It quickly burned at least 475 acres and prompted temporary evacuation orders and warnings before crews established significant containment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Dubbed the Bike Fire, the blaze was first detected at approximately 1:30 p.m. near Cambria Estates Lane and Ravenhill Road, close to Sand Canyon and Placerita Canyon roads. First responders reported that the fire started at just about 1 acre in light to medium brush before rapidly expanding uphill under erratic winds.
Rapid Spread and Erratic Fire Behavior
Firefighters faced challenging conditions as the flames threatened nearby structures in areas including Pineview Road, Mountain Park Road, Falter Road, and Pacy Road. The threat prompted authorities to request a third-alarm response as the rate of spread accelerated.
Throughout Sunday afternoon, the fire’s estimated acreage fluctuated rapidly:
- 1:48 p.m. – Initial evacuation warnings were issued for affected zones.
- 2:35 p.m. – The fire reached approximately 200 acres with a rapid rate of spread.
- 4:00 p.m. – Officials reported the size at 275 acres, which was later adjusted down to 172 acres following accurate mapping.
- 8:30 p.m. – Total acreage reached 475 acres with containment holding steady at 68%.
Authorities described the blaze as burning with erratic fire behavior. This prompted officials to establish an emergency evacuation shelter at the College of the Canyons Valencia campus.
Evacuations Downgraded and Containment Progress
As ground crews and aerial resources-including two air tankers and two Type 1 helicopters-battled the flames, progress allowed officials to scale back emergency measures. By late Sunday evening, all initial evacuation orders and warnings were successfully downgraded to advisories.
The Bike Fire marked the third notable wildfire in the immediate region within a single week. The Bouquet Fire, reported on October 3 near Bouquet Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest northeast of Santa Clarita, burned 1,048 acres and reached 83% containment by Sunday. Additionally, the Danny Fire ignited on October 8 approximately two miles south of Gorman, where forward progression was swiftly halted at 150 acres.
The cause of the Bike Fire remains under investigation by local authorities.
