Butterfly Ball Raises €2.13M for Caudwell Children

A high-profile fundraising gala held at the Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo generated €2,128,745 for Caudwell Children, more than doubling the proceeds from its previous year. The Butterfly Ball on Wednesday, October 7, combined guest donations, exclusive auction items, and match funding from billionaire philanthropist and charity founder John Caudwell.

The total significantly surpassed the €1,015,600 collected at the organization’s 10th-anniversary edition the previous year. Gathered in the venue’s Salle Empire, prominent Monaco residents and international philanthropists united to support initiatives providing vital services for disabled and autistic children.

Celebrating a Milestone While Delivering a Challenge

The event coincided with John Caudwell’s 74th birthday, though he noted the calendar alignment was largely coincidental. Going into the evening, the co-founder of UK mobile phone retailer Phones4u held modest expectations due to global economic instability, initially hoping to approach the €1 million mark.

The final tally was heavily reinforced by Caudwell’s standard practice of contributing an additional third in match funding. Beyond the financial figures, Caudwell utilized the platform to reiterate his firm belief that charities must be operated with strict commercial discipline to protect donor funds from waste and nepotism.

“We run the charity as lean as possible – like a business – but it’s a business with a heart,” Caudwell stated, emphasizing his responsibility to the broader donor community.

Direct Impact on Autism Assessments and Family Support

Funds raised during the Butterfly Ball directly support Caudwell Children’s specialized programs, most notably its streamlined autism assessment framework. The charity brings multidisciplinary specialists together in one location, allowing children aged four to 11 to receive a comprehensive diagnosis in a single day, sparing families months or years of traumatic waiting periods.

Founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 2000, Caudwell Children operates out of an £18 million (€21 million) International Children’s Centre in Staffordshire. In 2024 alone, the organization delivered more than £7.5 million worth of practical and emotional services to neurodivergent children and their families across the UK.

Exclusive Auction Lots Drive Record Contributions

The evening featured a competitive live and silent auction that contributed substantially to the €2.13 million final tally. Notable lots included:

  • A luxury stay at The Dorchester in London paired with a private cooking lesson alongside the hotel’s executive chef.
  • A framed memorabilia display from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, featuring authentic signatures from actors Roger Moore and Christopher Lee.
  • A signed photographic portrait of Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn.
  • A premium leather handbag by Monteluce adorned with distinctive horse-head motifs.

A Call to Action for Global Wealthy Philanthropists

Having signed the Giving Pledge in 2013-committing 70% of his fortune to charitable causes-Caudwell remains outspoken about the untapped potential of the world’s ultra-rich. He argues that even massive charitable contributions leave billionaires with more than enough resources to maintain luxurious lifestyles.

“We’ll still be super-rich. We’ll still have private jets and superyachts,” Caudwell noted. “We’ll still have everything we want in life, but we’ll put more effort into changing the lives of less fortunate people.”

Organizers hope the success of the Monaco gala will inspire similar philanthropic models internationally, expanding the reach of Caudwell Children’s specialized diagnostic and support infrastructure to families who might otherwise remain unsupported within overstretched public health systems.
