INDIANAPOLIS – Facing elimination on their home court, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever delivered a resilient performance to keep their postseason hopes alive. Clark recorded 27 points, 15 assists, and seven rebounds to lead the Indiana Fever to a 99-89 victory over the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, evening their best-of-three first-round playoff series at 1-1.

The win forces a winner-take-all Game 3 on Thursday in Las Vegas, with the victor advancing to the WNBA semifinals. Clark achieved her stellar stat line despite physical exhaustion, which included vomiting in the locker room near halftime after drinking too much water and playing through heavy fatigue.

“The way I looked at it is like, your back is up against the wall,” Clark said postgame. “The only opportunity you’re guaranteed to have is these 40 minutes, and you’re going to go down swinging if you lose. But I think we had the mentality that this was one we’re going to win no matter what.”

Making WNBA Playoff History Before Intermission

Clark set the tone right from the opening tip. She drained a 3-pointer off a pass from Aliyah Boston after head coach Stephanie White predicted the opening shot before the game. However, early offensive clunkiness and defensive lapses allowed the Aces to build an 11-point lead in the second quarter.

The turning point for Indiana came midway through the second period. Clark received a technical foul-her first in over two months-following an argument over an offensive foul call. Fueled by the moment, Clark orchestrated a dramatic turnaround. She sparked an 11-4 run and helped the Fever outscore Las Vegas 20-6 during a crucial stretch.

By halftime, Clark had accumulated 14 points and 11 assists. This made her the first player in WNBA history to record a points-assists double-double before intermission in a postseason game. Indiana carried a 48-43 lead into the locker room and never trailed again.

Balanced Scoring and Paint Dominance

Indiana’s supporting cast stepped up significantly following a disappointing Game 1 loss. Aliyah Boston contributed 22 points and four rebounds on efficient 10-of-15 shooting. Kelsey Mitchell added 26 points, drawing constant MVP chants from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse crowd.

The Fever dominated the interior. They outscored the Aces 58-26 in the paint and shot 52.1 percent overall from the field. Rookie Raven Johnson also provided critical minutes and hustle plays off the bench, including a buzzer-beating jumper to close out the first half.

For the Aces, Jackie Young led all scorers with 31 points. Four-time league MVP A’ja Wilson added 22 points and nine rebounds, passing Rebekkah Brunson for fourth on the WNBA’s career playoff rebounding list. A fourth-quarter confrontation between Wilson and a courtside fan led to a technical foul for the star forward and a brief stoppage, but Las Vegas could not fully close the gap.

Overcoming Late Trouble

Clark made professional history in a different way late in the fourth quarter. She fouled out for the first time in her career with 2:45 remaining on the clock. Her sixth foul came while attempting to guard Wilson in the restricted area, arriving shortly after the Aces trimmed Indiana’s lead to five points.

Even without their floor general on the court for the final minutes, the Fever held their composure down the stretch to secure the 10-point victory and force the decisive Game 3.

WNBA First-Round Playoff Schedule

  • Game 1: Las Vegas Aces defeated Indiana Fever
  • Game 2: Indiana Fever 99, Las Vegas Aces 89
  • Game 3: Indiana Fever at Las Vegas Aces, Thursday, Oct. 1 (Winner-take-all)
