Several NFL franchises, including the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions, have reached out to the Pittsburgh Steelers to check on the availability of star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. The trade inquiries come amid an ongoing contract dispute and a back injury that has sidelined the defender.
Porter is set to miss his third consecutive game due to the injury while simultaneously pursuing a lucrative contract extension ahead of the 2026 season. The Steelers previously offered Porter a deal worth roughly $27 million annually. However, the cornerback turned down the offer, seeking a contract closer to the top market rate of $33.75 million per year.
Because Pittsburgh maintains a strict internal policy against negotiating contract extensions once the regular season has begun, negotiations have completely stalled. Porter has not yet played this season as he works through his rehabilitation and contract impasse.
Trade Demands and Potential Destination Hurdles
Any team hoping to acquire the 26-year-old cornerback will face a steep price tag. League reports indicate the Steelers would require a strong compensation package in return, potentially a first-round draft pick or a combination featuring a second-round pick and a third-round pick.
In addition to giving up high-value draft capital, any interested franchise would also need to immediately negotiate a massive long-term extension with Porter to satisfy his market demands. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has expressed a willingness to pursue major defensive moves to bolster his roster financially, but the team’s remaining trade assets are limited following previous roster adjustments.
With the NFL trade deadline arriving on the Tuesday following Week 9, Pittsburgh and its disgruntled cornerback have a limited window to resolve the tension either through a reconciliation or a blockbuster trade.
