Dana White Skips Fury vs Joshua Press Conference, Blames Ego

October 1, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

UFC and Zuffa Boxing chief Dana White has confirmed he will skip the upcoming Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua press conference in London on Wednesday. White cited a direct scheduling conflict with his ongoing Contender Series commitments. This avoids what has rapidly evolved into a high-stakes promotional standoff with Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn.

The heavyweight mega-bout is scheduled for December 11 at Cardiff’s 80,000-capacity Principality Stadium, with the WBA ‘Super’ world title on the line. However, the road to the opening promotional event has faced intense behind-the-scenes friction regarding White’s exact capacity in the event.

The Roots of the Standoff Over Promotional Roles

Disputes escalated after Netflix released official promotional materials naming White as a co-promoter alongside The Ring-an entity aligned with Saudi boxing powerbroker Turki Alalshikh. This inclusion defied the preferences of Eddie Hearn and Anthony Joshua, who have reservations about White’s formal positioning within the promotional structure.

Commentator Max Kellerman suggested White was merely operating as a personal assistant to Alalshikh. However, the UFC CEO rejected that narrative. Speaking to reporters following the Contender Series, White doubled down on his promotional status.

“There’s no confusion whatsoever,” White told reporters. “If you look at everything from the network to the guy who’s actually paying for it, and to me saying what I’ve said. I’ve been saying it now feels like for weeks, but I’ve been saying the same thing. It’s a done deal. Everything that I’ve been saying is the truth.”

Dana White Dismisses Dispute as a “Total Ego Thing”

Tensions between White and Hearn have simmered throughout 2026. This was intensified by White’s expansion into boxing through Zuffa Boxing and the signing of prominent Matchroom fighters like Conor Benn. Addressing the ongoing public sparring, White asserted that the resistance to his involvement stems entirely from personal posturing.

“This isn’t a hesitation; this is an ego thing, a total ego thing,” White stated. He pointed to shifting geographical power dynamics within the combat sports industry, arguing that boxing’s commercial footprint has migrated away from North America.

“Boxing has taken a hit in the United States. It’s not as big as it was here 20 years ago. It has become a very British sport, and all the shit you’re hearing, and the crying, and the bitching is all coming from the UK,” White added.

Cardiff Showdown Moves Forward Despite Backstage Friction

White will miss the London launch event, where Joshua will appear alongside Hearn, and Tyson Fury will be represented by Frank Warren and Spencer Brown. Despite this, White insisted the bout is fully secured. The December 11 clash at Principality Stadium utilizes the venue’s retractable roof. This is a crucial asset designed to accommodate an 11 PM curfew while satisfying lucrative North American broadcast windows.

Both heavyweights look to re-establish dominance following recent career setbacks. Joshua is recovering from stoppage losses to Daniel Dubois, while Fury is returning from a brief retirement. The unprecedented promotional coalition between traditional boxing powerbrokers and the UFC leadership continues to command global attention.
