Alleged crime gang leader Daniel Kinahan is preparing to make a High Court bail application in the coming weeks, his legal team has announced. The 49-year-old appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin under heavy armed security on Monday, where prosecutors outlined the complex factual background of the ongoing organized crime case.
Kinahan faces a single charge of directing the activities of a criminal organization between October 18, 2015, and April 6, 2017, contrary to Section 71A of the Criminal Justice Act 2006. During the brief two-minute hearing, Kinahan wore a dark grey suit, black shirt, and glasses. He did not speak during the proceedings, but conferred briefly with his solicitor, Darragh Mackin of Belfast-based Phoenix Law, after the session.
Extradition and Court Remand Details
Kinahan was transported to the central Dublin Criminal Courts of Justice complex from Portlaoise Prison under tight security by the Garda Emergency Response Unit and Armed Support Unit, traveling in an armored prison van. He has been held in Portlaoise Prison since his extradition to Ireland.
Kinahan was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on April 15 on foot of an Irish arrest warrant, utilizing a permanent bilateral extradition treaty between Ireland and the UAE that came into force last year. He was subsequently flown to Ireland aboard an Irish Government jet, landing at Casement Aerodrome before being brought directly to court.
Presiding Judge Caroline Biggs remanded Kinahan in custody until December 21 to allow the prosecution time to finalize the book of evidence.
Prosecution Highlights Complex Case Background
Prosecution counsel Dominic McGinn SC told the three-judge, non-jury court that the case involves a complex factual matrix. To illustrate the immense scale of the investigation, Mr. McGinn noted that the statement of facts submitted to authorities in the United Arab Emirates for the extradition process ran to 189 pages.
Mr. McGinn stated that the prosecution is actively working to condense those extensive findings into a legally submissible document ahead of the December 21 deadline.
Defense Strategy and Upcoming Bail Application
Addressing the court, defense solicitor Darragh Mackin confirmed that his client will formally lodge papers and apply for bail before a High Court judge in the coming weeks. Mr. Mackin indicated that the defense intends to seek full disclosure regarding two separate international investigations in which Kinahan was previously investigated-referring to a money laundering probe in Dubai and an organized crime investigation in Spain-noting that his client was acquitted in both instances.
The defense team stressed that the eventual trial timetable must account for independent expert examinations of digital evidence gathered by investigators. Speaking outside the court following the adjournment, Mr. Mackin told reporters that his legal team looks forward to defending the case and hopes to see the trial commence early next year.
