Eric Potts Pleads Guilty to Indecent Child Image Offenses

Former Coronation Street and Still Game actor Eric Potts has pleaded guilty to six charges relating to the making and distribution of indecent images of children. Potts, 61, appeared at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on 1 October, where he admitted to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child and three counts of distributing them. He is currently due to be sentenced at Burnley Crown Court next month.

Court Hearing and Forensic Discoveries

During the brief 10-minute hearing, prosecutor Safia Hussain detailed the findings of a Lancashire Constabulary investigation into electronic devices seized from Potts’ home in Bacup, Lancashire. The hardware, which included a desktop PC, an HP laptop, and an iPhone, underwent rigorous extraction by a digital forensic unit.

Potts admitted to accumulating 83 indecent images over a span between May 2015 and October 2025. Under the United Kingdom’s legal classification system, the material spanned multiple severity tiers:

  • Category A: 7 images (the most severe classification)
  • Category B: 16 images
  • Category C: 60 images

Additionally, prosecutors established that Potts actively distributed five of the illicit files on a single day, 16 July 2024. This triggered the distribution charges alongside counts of production and possession.

How the Lancashire Police Investigation Unfolded

The criminal proceedings began in August 2025. Monitoring systems alerted the Lancashire Constabulary Internet Child Exploitation Team to a file-sharing account that had uploaded an indecent video of a child online. Detectives traced the digital trail directly to the residential property in Bacup where Potts had lived for two decades.

Officers executed a raid on the home and seized his personal computers and smartphone. Although initially released on bail following technical analysis, subsequent forensic evaluations exposed extensive additional troves of unauthorized media. Potts was arrested a second time, formally charged in September, and referred to magistrates before his recent guilty plea.

Television Career and Background

Recognizable to British television audiences, Potts is best known for portraying eccentric baker Diggory Compton in approximately 50 episodes of ITV’s Coronation Street between 2005 and 2006. His extensive television credits also include roles in Brookside, Casualty, Heartbeat, The Royal, Last of the Summer Wine, Emmerdale, and a 2005 appearance in Doctor Who.

In Scotland, he gained notable recognition for his appearance in a 2007 episode of the BBC sitcom Still Game, where he played Mr Henderson, the inventor of the Beefy Bake. Born in Irvine, Ayrshire, Potts initially studied law at Glasgow University before training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He subsequently built a career across television, theatre, and seasonal pantomimes.

Legal Status and Next Steps

Because magistrates’ courts carry statutory limits on the length of prison sentences they can impose for severe offenses, the case was transferred to a higher judicial authority. Potts remains on bail ahead of his upcoming sentencing hearing at Burnley Crown Court next month, where a judge will determine his custodial term.
