Falcons Secure Defensive Lineman Gervon Dexter With Extension

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to a four-year contract extension with defensive lineman Gervon Dexter Sr. on September 30, 2026. This move locks in the interior defensive presence after the team acquired him via trade earlier in the year. The extension is valued at $78 million and contains $46.5 million in guaranteed money. Dexter arrived from the Chicago Bears in August in exchange for defensive back Clark Phillips III and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

General Manager Ian Cunningham Praises Dexter’s Impact

“Gervon is a young, ascending talent whose power, disruption and impact along the defensive line are difficult to find,” said Ian Cunningham, Atlanta Falcons general manager. “What’s been just as impressive is the growth he’s shown off the field as a man and a father. His passion for the game and commitment to his teammates are qualities we value highly, and we’re excited to keep him as an important part of our defense moving forward. I also want to thank Drew and Jason Rosenhaus for their communication and partnership throughout this process.”

Dexter originally entered the NFL as a second-round draft pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2023 NFL Draft. Cunningham served as assistant general manager for the Bears at that time. By 2024, Dexter had developed into a full-time starter. He started all 32 games across the 2024 and 2025 seasons and finished second on the team in sacks in both years.

Immediate Production in Atlanta’s Defensive Front

Since joining the Falcons, Dexter has quickly become a vital component of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s unit. Through his first three games with Atlanta, Dexter recorded 15 total pressures, six tackles, three quarterback hits, 0.5 sacks, and a deflected pass. His performance propelled him to No. 8 in the NFL in quarterback pressure rate at 20.5% among players with at least 50 pass-rush snaps.

Alongside fellow defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus, Dexter formed an interior duo that generated 27 pressures. This output led all interior defensive line combinations in the league early in the season. The extension guarantees financial security for the 24-year-old player while cementing his status as a cornerstone for the franchise’s defensive plans for years to come.
