British luxury automaker Jaguar has officially unveiled its new Type 01 grand tourer in New York City. This marks a definitive commercial and design shift toward ultra-luxury electric vehicles. Aimed squarely at younger, design-literate tech consumers, the 5.2-meter-long four-door model represents a radical departure from the brand’s previous internal combustion lineup. This follows a comprehensive two-year rebrand by parent company Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).
Order books open in early 2027, and customer deliveries begin later that year. The Type 01 starts at approximately £120,000 in the UK and roughly $130,500 in the U.S. This pricing tier doubles the entry point of the brand’s historical models. It aligns with a broader JLR strategy to pivot toward North American wealth markets and counter recent commercial challenges.
Pioneering Architecture and Powertrain Specifications
Built on the brand-dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), the Type 01 utilizes an advanced 850-volt system powering a high-performance tri-motor setup. The vehicle delivers 1,015 horsepower (1,030 PS) and 1,035 Newton-meters of torque across a four-wheel-drive system, achieving a 0-to-62 mph acceleration time of 3.2 seconds.
- Battery Capacity: 118 kWh usable energy storage system
- Driving Range: Up to 450 miles on the WLTP cycle (approx. 400 miles EPA estimate)
- Charging Capability: Adds 200 miles of range in 13 minutes using 350kW rapid DC chargers
- Aerodynamics: Features active vanes, a three-stage deployable spoiler, and a drag coefficient of 0.23
Exterior Design and Interior Layout
The exterior aesthetic features a low roofline measuring just 1.4 meters high, an ultra-long bonnet, and frameless doors. A traditional rear window is absent. It is replaced instead by an integrated rear-facing camera system. The vehicle rides on 23-inch wheels and incorporates a distinctive rear-quarter treatment dubbed the “Impossible Panel,” engineering aluminum surfaces to eliminate visible glass seals.
Inside, the cabin is divided by a central longitudinal spine featuring brass-effect anodized aluminum accents. Front and rear occupants sit in four individual spaces. The dashboard features a single curved 24-inch glass OLED screen operating the latest Jaguar Infotainment suite. This is supported by a secondary seven-inch smartphone-style touchscreen and an automotive-first full-width Panoramic Soundbar integrated with Kvadrat acoustic textiles.
Strategic Rebrand and Market Positioning
The unveiling comes two years after Jaguar’s controversial marketing reset in late 2024, which generated widespread social media debate. Managing Director Rawdon Glover noted that the brand intentionally moved away from its historical, aging demographic of male buyers in their fifties. Instead, it courts affluent, urban consumers who value disruptive modernist design.
The vehicle’s massive footprint measures over 5.2 meters long and 2 meters wide. While this presents parking challenges in dense European urban environments, JLR executives remain confident. They believe the model’s all-wheel steering and high-end performance specifications will establish a strong foothold among tech entrepreneurs and luxury car collectors globally.
