James Austin Johnson Brings Trump Impression to SNL UK

James Austin Johnson brought his signature Donald Trump impression across the Atlantic during a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live UK. This marked the comedy franchise’s first-ever U.S.-U.K. current cast crossover. The American cast member, who has played Trump on the NBC sketch series for five years, appeared in the cold open in a skit about international diplomacy and current political affairs.

A Downing Street Crossover

The sketch opened at Downing Street, featuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, played by Freddie Meredith, meeting with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, portrayed by George Fouracres. The setup riffed on a real-life meeting between Zelenskyy and Burnham earlier that week. The two leaders had discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and efforts to repair diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the United States.

As Burnham promised Zelenskyy that he would raise his concerns directly with the U.S. president, Johnson’s Trump interrupted the proceedings. “You say my name and I appear,” Trump announced, before diving into a rambling routine that quickly took over the scene.

The Job Swap Proposal

Johnson’s Trump proposed a “Job Swap” with the British Prime Minister. He offered to take over the United Kingdom while Burnham inherited the United States. “I tell you, that place is a real mess,” Johnson’s Trump warned. “It’s an awful job. It’s a terrible place full of disgusting people. I don’t know why I do it.”

From there, the impressionist rattled through local British references and current news stories, touching upon small boats, Manchester City, and Percy Pigs. He also poked fun at the British show’s casting choices, pointing out a key logistical irony in the crossover.

“SNL UK, you’re telling me you don’t have a guy, the whole cast, you don’t have one guy who can play Trump? What an awful situation.”

Johnson also discovered an unexpected perk of performing on British television. After casually dropping a curse word as part of the routine, he paused to break character and savor the broadcast standards. “Ooh, you can say ‘s—‘ on this one,” he remarked. “That felt really good. Very weird. I feel really weird.”

Franchise History and Context

While Saturday Night Live UK had referenced Donald Trump frequently in past episodes, the character had never appeared in person on the Sky comedy series. Johnson’s appearance created a milestone for the franchise by bridging the American and British editions through an active cast member.

Before Johnson’s cameo, only two SNL alumni had crossed over into the UK adaptation. Tina Fey hosted the series premiere, and Jimmy Fallon dropped in for a Weekend Update segment during the first season.

James Austin Johnson debuted his version of Donald Trump in the Season 47 premiere of the American show in October 2021, shortly after joining the cast as a featured player. Having completed 55 appearances in the role on the U.S. program, Johnson has played the former president more frequently than anyone else in the show’s history, surpassing Alec Baldwin’s total of 47 appearances.
