Japanese professional volleyball athlete Rui Takahashi has publicly announced that he is gay and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. The 26-year-old outside hitter for the SV.League club Suntory Sunbirds Osaka shared his personal revelation through a detailed statement on his official Instagram account on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Takahashi, the older brother of prominent Japanese men’s national volleyball team member Ran Takahashi, opened up about his long-standing internal struggles with self-identity and acceptance. In his public statement, he recounted years of apprehension and self-denial.
“I’ve been afraid to face my own side since I was a child, and I’ve been troubled and denied myself,” Takahashi wrote. “That means I’m gay and a member of the sexual minority.”

By putting my feelings into words, I was able to organize my mind, and I gradually started to think that ‘being myself is fine.’”
