Indonesian rescue teams have recovered additional bodies from the wreckage of the Virgo Transport 8 ferry in the Java Sea. This raises the confirmed death toll from the maritime disaster to 64. The vessel capsized earlier this month during severe weather conditions while traveling from East Java to Borneo island.
Authorities confirmed that emergency teams successfully rescued 108 survivors following the accident. However, 71 individuals remain unaccounted for and are officially presumed dead as search and rescue operations continue around the submerged wreck and adjacent coastlines.
The ferry lost all communications after departing from Surabaya en route to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. Official records indicate that the vessel first issued a distress call in the Masalembo archipelago after encountering hazardous 3-meter waves. The rough waters caused the ship to list heavily before it ultimately sank in waters approximately 30 meters deep.
Specialized Recovery Operations Underway
Specialized divers deployed to the disaster site have managed to retrieve trapped victims by breaking through underwater cabin windows. Operations on Friday yielded four bodies from directly inside the ship’s hull, while seven additional victims were recovered along nearby shorelines.
Yudhi Bramantyo, the Operation Director for the National Search and Rescue Agency, announced that the active search operation for the 71 still missing has been formally extended for an additional seven days. Officials will evaluate the ongoing efforts every three days to determine whether operations should proceed further.
Under Indonesian maritime regulations, standard search-and-rescue operations typically last for an initial seven-day period. However, rules permit extensions if authorities believe there is a realistic possibility of locating additional victims.
