British Olympic gold medalist Katy Marchant announced her retirement from elite track cycling on September 28, 2026, bringing a distinguished 13-year career to a close. This announcement follows her recent team sprint silver medal performance alongside teammates Sophie Capewell and Rihanna Parris-Smith at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The 33-year-old cyclist leaves the sport as one of Britain’s most accomplished sprinters. Marchant’s career highlights include securing historic team sprint gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell, where the trio broke the world record three times. That triumph added to her individual sprint bronze won on her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Games.
Reflecting on her decision to step away from international competition, Marchant noted that her perspective shifted following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She had initially targeted a spot at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. However, she reconsidered after discussing her future with her husband, Rob, following two successful days of racing in Scotland.
“I’ve achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of achieving,” Marchant said. “It just feels really strange. It’s not been a difficult decision. I know what it takes to push on for another two years. I’m incredibly proud of where I’ve got to and what I’ve done. I just don’t want to make those choices any more to keep doing what it takes to get to LA.”
Beyond her medals, Marchant has carved out a pioneering legacy as a mother in elite sports. She originally transitioned to track cycling in 2013 after starting out as a British junior heptathlete. Years later, she made history by becoming the first British female track sprinter to return to elite competition after welcoming children. She competed in Paris in 2024 two years after the birth of her first son, Arthur, and returned to the track in January 2026 just six months after welcoming her second son, Walter.
