Keanu Reeves Stop-Motion Film Hidari Seeks New Financier

Japanese animation studio Dwarf Studios is actively searching for a new financing partner for its upcoming stop-motion samurai film, Hidari. The project, which features Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves as a voice actor, hit a major roadblock after negotiations with a US-based company fell through over creative and ownership rights.

Producer Matsumoto Noriko revealed details of the setback during the Asian Contents & Film Market, held alongside the Busan International Film Festival. According to Matsumoto, the stalled negotiations centered on a proposed agreement where the US financier would cover the entire production budget in exchange for 100 percent ownership of the film’s rights.

Why Negotiations Stalled Over Intellectual Property

Dwarf Studios declined the initial US proposal because it required completely surrendering the project’s intellectual property. Instead, the Japanese studio countered with a plan to retain 50 percent of the intellectual property while securing domestic Japanese investment to cover the remaining production budget.

However, momentum ground to a halt when the primary contacts handling the negotiations lost their jobs amid broader corporate restructuring and executive changes within Hollywood. Facing these unexpected hurdles, Dwarf Studios walked away from the talks to protect its long-term stake in the property.

Production Details and Creative Vision for Hidari

Despite the funding setback, Dwarf Studios is pressing forward. The studio is pursuing alternative funding arrangements designed to keep production moving while allowing the core creators to maintain ownership of their work.

Hidari is directed by Kawamura Masashi and is being developed collaboratively by Dwarf Studios alongside production partners Whatever and Tecarat. The film draws heavily on the rich traditions of classic Japanese samurai cinema, utilizing intricate stop-motion animation techniques to bring its unique historical action story to the screen.
