GRAMMY-winning artist Lil Nas X has officially returned to music with “World’s Greatest,” his first single in a year and a half. The deeply personal track is a reflective journey for the 27-year-old performer. It combines an uplifting message of resilience with an emotional tribute to his late mother, Tamikia Hill, who passed away in August.
Written entirely by Montero Hill and produced by C.WRAY alongside Steve Rusch, “World’s Greatest” features a self-assured, rock-driven sound. The single includes a powerful chorus where the artist proudly proclaims, “I’m a champion.” This frames the release as a chest-out homage to self-confidence and healing after a turbulent period out of the spotlight.
A Visual Journey Through Past and Present
Filmmaker Phillip Youmans directed the accompanying music video in Lil Nas Xβs hometown of Atlanta. The narrative opens in a dance studio. Here, the singer struggles to break through a mental block during choreography rehearsals while his dance trainer critiques his repetitive mistakes.
As the visual unfolds, present-day footage is intercut with dramatized flashbacks of his childhood. These scenes depict growing up with his siblings, trying on high-heeled boots, and simple everyday memories. Reconnecting with his younger self unlocks a creative breakthrough, allowing his choreography to flow freely. Toward the end of the track, the video nods to his 2021 global hit “Industry Baby” by incorporating a spliced sample of the lyric “This one is for the champions.”
Honoring His Motherβs Memory
The wisdom of Lil Nas Xβs late mother forms the emotional core of “World’s Greatest.” Leading up to the release, the rapper shared a poignant social video featuring a voicemail from Hill. In the audio, she encourages him: “Keep your head up. Continue to walk by faith, not by sight. Let go and let God handle the rest.”
The music video closes by replaying the voicemail. It then fades to a black screen with a dedicated tribute: “In loving memory Tamikia Hill. Love u forever mommy.”
The new single follows a transformative period for the artist. Earlier this year, he opened up about focusing on his mental health, navigating a bipolar disorder diagnosis, and spending time in treatment to find his creative footing once again. With “World’s Greatest,” Lil Nas X takes a powerful and empowering step into his next musical chapter.
