Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford etched his name into the NFL history books on Sunday Night Football, becoming the first player in league history to surpass 20,000 passing yards with two different franchises during an interconference matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Stafford, who previously accumulated 45,109 passing yards during his 12-year tenure with the Detroit Lions, reached the milestone in the first half at Empower Field at Mile High. NBC Sports confirmed the unprecedented achievement as Stafford helped guide the Rams to an early 13-0 advantage before halftime.
The milestone moment unfolded despite challenging conditions on a rainy night in Denver. Compounding the difficulty, Stafford played without his top wide receiver, Puka Nacua, who was sidelined due to a hip injury, and saw tight ends Terrance Ferguson and Colby Parkinson exit the game early due to injuries.
Early in the opening quarter, Stafford connected with tight end Tyler Higbee for a five-yard touchdown pass. That scoring play marked the 428th career regular-season touchdown pass of the veteran quarterback’s illustrious career.
Stafford initially entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick out of Georgia by the Lions in 2009. Following a blockbuster trade with Detroit in January 2021, he joined the Rams and promptly captured a Super Bowl title in his debut season. Having already secured an NFL MVP award for the 2025 campaign, Stafford continues to add to a historic career that now features a passing milestone no other signal-caller has ever reached.
