Legendary heavy metal band Metallica officially inaugurated their highly anticipated “Life Burns Faster” residency at the Las Vegas Sphere on October 1, 2026. Delivering a visually immersive and sonically intense performance, the group kicked off a massive 24-show run scheduled across paired nights every Thursday and Saturday, continuing through March 2027 at the 20,000-capacity venue.
The opening night featured an 18-song setlist spanning Metallica’s extensive career, drawing from material ranging from their 1983 debut album up to their 2023 release. Utilizing the Sphere’s colossal 160,000-square-foot interior screen and 240-foot-high curved display, the band integrated dynamic, nearly 3D visuals to accompany iconic tracks like “Ride the Lightning,” “Master of Puppets,” and “…And Justice for All.”
Inside the Opening Night Setlist and Rare Performances
The kickoff performance delivered several surprises for longtime fans. Metallica opened the show with “Battery” for the first time since 2014. The night also marked the return of “…And Justice for All” to the live setlist for the first time in over a decade, alongside “Now That We’re Dead,” which had not been played live since 2021.
Another emotional highlight of the evening was a performance of “The Call of Ktulu,” which co-founder and drummer Lars Ulrich and the band dedicated to late bassist Cliff Burton. Other notable tracks performed during the inaugural night included “Creeping Death,” “Sad but True,” “The Shortest Straw,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “The Day That Never Comes,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “Lux Æterna,” “The Memory Remains,” and “Seek & Destroy,” before closing out the evening with “Master of Puppets.”
The No Repeat Weekend Format at the Sphere
Following the model established during the 2023 launch of their M72 World Tour, the residency utilizes a strict “No Repeat Weekend” format. Every Thursday and Saturday pairing features completely distinct setlists to ensure a unique experience for fans attending multiple shows.
The seed for the residency was planted early on. According to Lars Ulrich, the idea took hold almost immediately after experiencing the venue firsthand. “About 12 seconds into the opening night of Sphere with U2 back in ’23, I thought ‘We have to do this, it’s completely uncharted territory!’” Ulrich stated when the residency was first announced. “This residency gives us another chance to reinvent how we interact with our fans in a live setting.”
