Actor Michael Douglas recently reflected on a defining moment of his youth during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. He recounted how his legendary father, Kirk Douglas, handed him a $10,000 check at age 21 and declared that he was completely on his own.
Promoting his memoir, One Helluva Ride, Michael Douglas shared the challenging reality of receiving this tough-love financial cutoff just as he still had two years of college tuition remaining. Host Jimmy Kimmel noted that Kirk Douglas had famously appeared on the very same program 19 years prior to promote his own collection of memoirs.
“I was 21 years old. He said, ‘Son,’ and he wrote me a check, $10,000. He said, ‘OK, you’re on your own,’” Michael recalled during the interview. He noted that while he appreciated the gesture, he immediately had to remind his father about lingering college expenses. “I said, ‘Well, that’s great, Dad, but I mean, I got you – I got two years of college left. Dad, I’m happy. I really appreciate it, but you know, there’s tuitions and things like that.’”
The Legacy of Tough Love in Hollywood
According to Michael, his father frequently referenced that $10,000 transaction years later when lecturing his younger siblings. Kirk would proudly tell his other sons that Michael had never asked for another financial favor after receiving that initial lump sum.
However, the Oscar-winning actor also admitted to taking unconventional measures to make ends meet during his college years. During promotional stops for his book, including an appearance on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher, Michael joked about utilizing a pair of Italian leather suitcases gifted by his father to transport contraband between the East and West Coasts.
Building an Independent Career
Despite the hurdles of entering adulthood under the shadow of a cinematic icon, Michael Douglas forged an acclaimed path in Hollywood. He secured an Academy Award for producing One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and won another Oscar for his portrayal of corporate raider Gordon Gekko in 1985’s Wall Street.
Kirk Douglas, born Issur Danielovitch, passed away on February 5, 2020, at the age of 103. He left behind an indelible mark on cinema through classics like Spartacus, Lust for Life, and Paths of Glory. Today, Michael’s stories about his father serve as both humorous anecdotes of 1960s youth and a tribute to the complex expectations carried by entertainment dynasties.
